We feel strongly that Khan Academy is that important for complimentary skill work.
We use Khan Academy as a compliment to the math curriculum. It is intended to be an online resource to prepare, practice, and master the skills they are learning in school- BEFORE and after they learn it in school. Khan Academy allows students the opportunity to practice the math skills we teach before we teach them in class. This allows the students to attend class with a preparedness that will allow them to gain individual understanding of the particular skill through the opportunity to ask questions specific to their needs. The students can then practice the skills until they have achieved mastery.
We chose Khan Academy as one of our online learning components for several reasons. Khan Academy uses common core standards-aligned materials, is non-profit, and provides a learning experience where students can use practice exercises that requires them to get the correct answer before they move on. The program aids the student in achieve 100% by providing step-by-step hints and instructional videos to lead the student to the correct answers; the student will learn more than how to get the right answer, they will learn the theory behind how to get the right answer. Additionally, the "missions" the students are undertaking are adaptive to their needs; Khan Academy will recommend new skills based on their math history on the site. Students may also search for virtually any math topic to find relevant videos and exercises. Khan Academy is also a great source for learning science, economics, finance, arts, and computing. We recommend 2 skills each night (Sunday - Thursday) Due EVERY Thursday at 11:59:59pm!!! It is a weekly grade for complimentary skill work; Incomplete skill sets will not count. It is graded every Weekend and CANNOT be made up (except through earning extra credit the following week).
ALG1 WEEKLY grading is as follows:
120 problems or more per week = 12/8
90-119 problems = 11/8
75-89 problems = 10/8
60-74 problems = 9/8
30-59 problems = 8/8
<30 problems = zero points.
Starting Tri2 2025 for Math 8 students
27 skill sets or more per week = 12/8
20 skill sets = 11/8
17 skill sets = 10/8
13 skill sets = 9/8
7 skill sets = 8/8
≤7 skills = zero points.
***Time in Advisement each week may be dedicated to Khan Academy for those with internet issues at home. The Effort assignment CANNOT be turned in late or made up. Videos are supplementary learning (extra knowledge) and are not counted as skill sets. Previous grade level skill sets do not count unless assigned. Current math level "course challenge" DOES NOT count toward weekly effort. Obvious gaming of the grading system will not be counted.
We will take the Khan Academy Course Challenge in class at the beginning and end of each year (does not count towards weekly effort score). Through the KA Coaching program, we are recommending to students specific classwork related topics to MASTER. They will receive extra credit for that mastery topic once mastered. All skills are assigned IN KHAN ACADEMY!!! Please attempt each skill in the order they appear.
Preview Due Date: Typically, the Thursday before the following week's lesson. Students are required to preview the assignment BEFORE it is taught (found in "Active" Assignments in Khan). It is not expected that they score any correct answers at this time.
Final Due Date: The day of the Unit Assessment. Khan skills should be practiced until "you can't get any wrong". Students are required to return to the skill AFTER it is taught to improve their skill in preparation for the unit exam (found in "Past" Assignments in Khan).
The MASTERY skill assignment will be scored as follows for each recommendation:
10/8 for achieving mastery level
8/8 for Proficient level
5/8 for familiar level
3/8 for attempted level (not including zero scores).
0 for missing assignment rework (see below) and zero correct answers
Math 8 students will submit their scratch paper every Thursday to
"show their work" in order to receive a "skill" grade above "attempted".
See the appendix in the Professionalism Handbook for more information.
Missing (Not Started) assignments will remain as missing until they are completed with at least one correct answer. 1 ib scale reduction for completing AFTER missing preview. 2.5 ib scale reduction for completing AFTER the associated unit test. 3.5 ib scale reduction for completing AFTER the associated preceding unit test. (zero correct answers not acceptable)
*Preview & Mastery Challenge grading notes: There are over 40 recommended skills assigned throughout the year; there are anywhere between 3 and 20 skills per unit assessment. Assignments will be marked in the grade book as "missing" if they have not been sufficiently attempted by the time of the "preview" due date (as indicated through the KA coaching report). The student must answer at least one question correctly, one time in order to remove the missing grade (max score will then be 7 rather than 10). "Mastery" is achieved by scoring correct answers on Mastery Challenges and Unit Tests. Grades will be adjusted weekly as the student "levels up" from missing. Grades below 10 will not be recorded until the week of/after the unit assessment. Students should be aware of their progress towards mastery by viewing their individual Khan progress report or Class Course report. Previous unit skills will only be graded upon written or electronic request indicating the specific skill to be updated in the grade book. Grades below a 10 (excluding missing) will not be recorded if the topic is not covered in class by the end of the first/second trimester; that particular recommendation will be moved to the subsequent trimester grade book. *Students will submit their scratch paper every Thursday in order to justify their scores and to "show their work" to receive a grade above "attempted". Students will receive a work habits grade based on the number of skills and problems completed each week.
