Welcoming Mrs.Pettaway

By: Alexia Leach & Jenkins Zarwie

Do you remember Mr. Billings, he was our principal last year and as you may have noticed he has not been here this year. He is currently working for the school still just in a different position. As you may have noticed we have a new face in the building and are so excited to start our journey and year with our new principal Mrs. Pettaway. She grew up in Kansas City Missouri, and her favorite subject in school was math. In her free time she loves playing basketball which is her favorite sport. Along with that her favorite sports teams are the Kansas Chiefs, it’s understandable since she grew up in their city, and of course the Drake bulldogs which is where she went to college for undergrad. Then got her masters in Kansas. Finally she got her administration degree at Iowa State University. She wanted this job because it gave her and our community a chance to see a woman and person of color in a positive spotlight as a principal. She also views herself as a trailblazer and loves to take on new challenges and opportunities. Additionally she enjoys getting to see students succeed, and improve themselves as individuals. Her thoughts here at SMS were very positive. For example she said people including students and teachers and other peers here in our Johnston community have been so kind and welcoming towards her. We are very excited to have her in our school and make sure to greet her with respect when you see her in the hallways and around the building.

Robots

By Juju K.

Robots are human-made machines that are programmed to replace human jobs in different ways. What I mean by that is some robots can clean, walk your pet, give hugs, stand up on its feet, have strength , and even talk, just like a human. Robots are typically made out of raw material like steel, aluminum, and cast iron. Some special and cool robots are made of titanium. Robots are well known in this world because of all of the great things it’s incapable of! If humans don’t go to other humans for help they sure do get robots. The only difference humans and robots have is that robots are made by humans and just have cords and engines instead of meat and bones.

Baby Formula Shortage

By Kenzie

After months of empty store shelves, the U.S. is still facing a nationwide shortage of baby formula. In fact, a little over 20% of formula products were out of stock in the six weeks leading up to July 24, according to data collected by market research firm Information Resources. There are plenty of states that are affected by there being no baby formula, such as Tennessee, Kansas and Delaware are states seeing the worst of the shortage. The shortage, caused by a mix of supply-chain problems and a recall, has led to empty shelves at some stores, product restrictions and concern among parents and caregivers. Low-income families are especially affected. People ask/ wonder “why isn’t there anymore formula?” Well The initial cause of the formula shortage was COVID-19 issues, with some sources, including The Atlantic and Popular Mechanics, identifying it as still being the leading cause. The shortage began in the early days of the pandemic, and worsened with subsequent labor shortages. Also people wonder when the baby formula will get back in stock, The US Food and Administration commissioner said last week that formula production needs to continue for six to eight more weeks for supply to keep up with demand. Programs designed to help families affected by the shortage are being extended.
