Hi! My name is Drew Scouten and I am a senior at Jamesville-Dewitt High School. This year, I dedicated my project to researching the issue of sexual violence as a whole and more specifically, in colleges. Being a new adult preparing for the real world, I felt that this issue was very important for my age group as we take the next step towards living independently. So I decided that the best way to accomplish this goal of addressing sexual violence and what we can do to prevent it was via a grade wide presentation with the specific research question of "What can school administrators do to better educate Graduating Seniors on the topic of sexual violence in adulthood?"
As this project went through several different iterations, there were a handful of individuals that stuck with me throughout the whole process and gave me large amounts of help while I continued to work on this project. I met/talked with several community experts such as Chris Kosakowski (Counselor @ ESF), Cindy Britz (Former Vera House worker) and Nicole Blidy (Counselor @ Colgate). I also received tremendous amounts of support from my teacher mentor Melissa Moore, who, through much deliberation helped me to arrive at my final project. In which I plan to present a slideshow to my school through the announcements, coupled along with teacher interviews regarding advice on staying safe in college. The presentation revolves around an education on rape culture, consent, supporting survivors, reporting resources and bystander intervention.
