March 26th: Loaning Laptops

  • SFUSD is working to provide access to technology for students in need, to the greatest extent possible, to support the continuity of learning.

    • The district will loan Chromebooks to SFUSD students in grades 3-12 who do not have access to a computer during the day at home to support distance learning.

    • All devices will be on loan to families and will need to be returned to SFUSD when the district reopens. There is a limit of one device per student.

    • How to borrow a device:

      • Schools are currently reaching out to families to assess technology needs.

      • If your child needs to borrow a device, contact your school site principal to learn how your school is making devices available.

      • If you are not able to contact your child’s principal, you can fill out our Distance Learning Device Request form to request a device and a member of our team will be in contact.

  • SFUSD is also sharing resources for families who need help connecting to the Internet.

    • During this unprecedented, constantly evolving situation we are exploring many avenues to expand access to the Internet for families.

As always, contact your advisor if you have any other questions.

March 24th: JCYC Scholarship Application Deadline Extended

About the Scholarship

Recognizing a need for funds to access higher education within our student population, JCYC has pledged to award scholarships to young people that are participants of JCYC programs. With money raised through the SF Aloha Run and the support of our generous donors, we are hoping to award at least one student from each program that applies, with award amounts ranging from $500 to $3,000, depending on a student’s individual financial need and postsecondary plans.

Scholarship Eligibility

The scholarship is available to high school seniors that are currently participating in a JCYC program (Educational Talent Search, Upward Bound, San Francisco College Access Center, STEM, JCYC Workforce Programs, Japantown Youth Leaders, Tomo Counselors, and/or JCYC Asian Youth Prevention Services) that will be enrolled in a 2 or 4 year college full time for the academic year 2020-2021. Students must have a minimum 2.0 GPA (cumulative and unweighted), and priority will be given to those that demonstrate financial need or who will be first in their families to attend college. Students are eligible to apply regardless of their citizenship status. Note that this scholarship is specifically for students that are current participants of JCYC programs, and not open to previous participants or alumni.

Scholarship Application

The application consists of general applicant information, educational plans, demographics and socio-economic information. Students will be required to submit one 500 word essay, one letter of recommendation, and a resume that includes their involvement with JCYC and which program(s) they are a participant of. Applications must be submitted by April 3rd, 5pm. Our exciting update this year is that the application is now online (was previously all paper). Students will fill out their online application, and scan the following attachments:

  1. Financial Aid document (FAFSA or Dream Act Student Aid Report)

  2. Copy of unofficial transcript

  3. Student resume

  4. Letter of recommendation
