The Science Olympiad team is a group of 20 students who love to solve very difficult science problems. They will design and test projects as well as do extensive research on various science topics. We practice all year long for our Regional Science Olympiad Competition, where we compete against other Science Olympiad teams in the region.
There is an emphasis on creativity and problem solving using LEGO Mindstorms' kits and Wonder Dash Bots. Students will use LEGO parts, sensors, motors and detailed instructions to build robots that can do really cool things! With experience, children build more complex robots and coding, designing, and modifying to make their ideas come to life.
Yearbook Club is made of 4th and 5th grade students with an interest in photography, marketing and design. The students help choose the theme, cover, fonts and layout of the book. They also create posters and fliers advertising the sale of the books. At the end of the year, they distribute the Yearbooks to all the WJES students.
For students who love PE, this is a Fitness extension of the PE class. We do stretches, running, and play games that will get your heart rate up! We meet on Tuesdays from 2:20-3:30 in the gym or football field.
AT WJES Tome Student Literacy Society (Tome Society) serves students in grades 3rd-5th by providing a diverse menu of digital student competitions; an annual book award list of new, clean, fun-to-read children's and young adult literature titles; student book club activities; curriculum materials for educators; and the TomeCon annual conference for both students and educators. All activities promote self-esteem, leadership skills, character ethics, and nurture critical thinking, creativity, and imagination in the digital age.
The West Jackson Singers chorus is a group of 4th and 5th grade students who like to sing. We meet on Tuesday afternoons from 2:30 until 3:30. During the first semester of school, we learn Christmas music and work on developing our vocal instrument. During the second semester of school, these students work together as a team to bring the story of our spring musical to life through set design and character development. They perform their musical both during school and after school in our gym, which they transform into scenes from the musical.
Odyssey of the Mind is in its first year at WJES! OM is where creativity and problem-solving collide. Our school has two teams this year: one for grades K-2 and one for grades 3-5. Student teams work collaboratively to create solutions for both "long-term" and "spontaneous" problems.
Dreamgirls is an original club that began in 2018. It is a club for girls in 2nd and 3rd grade who want to explore their passion for all things "STEAM". The club highlights women in STEM fields, participates in STEM/STEAM competitions, and MOST importantly has a BLAST being "brainy girls".
Art Club is a fun, creative class open to students in 4th and 5th grade. Students will create artwork using a variety of art supplies and techniques, such as drawing, painting, printmaking, paper mache, soft sculpture and more. Students will be encouraged to express their creativity through their artwork.
Good News Club is a weekly faith-based program sponsored through a local partnership for 5-to-12-year-old children featuring a lesson, songs, memory verses, and games.
This club is for conservation-minded 3rd -5th graders who will lead school efforts in creating a GREEN School that reduces, re-uses, and recycles materials and waste. As a “Conservation Captain”, student responsibilities include helping sort organic waste during lunchtime (and possibly breakfast), adding it to our compost bins, creating school displays of materials that can be recycled and ways to turn “trash to treasure”, and being on our school news to communicate GREEN school events. Additionally, this club will maintain our school gardens by germinating and caring for plants, weeding garden areas, and caring for our farm animals.
The Student Leadership team is a select group of students who possess outstanding leadership qualities. The group is comprised of fourth and fifth graders. These students went through an extensive application process that included a written portion, teacher recommendations, and interviews with members of our community. Panther Leaders duties include greeting students in the morning, helping in classrooms, being buddies to our new students, present at school functions, assisting in after school events, and being overall ambassadors to our school. Panther Leaders are true assets to West Jackson Elementary.
