Course Description: The Advanced English 11 course is designed to help students become skilled readers of prose written in a variety of periods, disciplines, and rhetorical contexts of American literature and to become skilled writers who can compose for a variety of purposes. By their writing and reading in this course, students should become aware of the interactions among a writer’s purposes, audience expectations, and subjects, as well as the way grammar conventions and the nuances of the English language contribute to effective writing. At the end of this course, students will be well prepared for the rigors of college reading and writing and will be ready for Advanced English 12. This is a grade weighted course.
Students enrolling in Advanced English 11 are strongly encouraged to take AP US History.

Course Description: Digital Media, a course based on the Indiana Academic Standards for English/Language Arts and Media Literacy Standards, is a study of media literacy and production skills. This course examines the impact of informational, narrative, and persuasive media on everyday life. This course will focus on changes in media and includes practice in broadcast journalism, audio/visual storytelling, multimedia storytelling, as well as different platforms such as online and social media. Students will analyze local, national, and global media through the lens of law, ethics, and social responsibility. Students use course content to become knowledgeable consumers and producers of media. By the end of the semester, students will write and produce media projects.

Course Description: A beginning course in creative writing. Introduces students to writing in various genres by means of creative exercises and assignments, workshops, and individual conferences. Students are taught the fundamentals of style, as well as new writing techniques. Units on poetry, fiction, plays/screenwriting, short story, memoir, and creative non-fiction are taught. The main objective of this class is to help you gain a fundamental grasp of the wide range of possibilities creative writing offers and to engage your imaginative and analytical faculties. This course is intended for beginning writers with a willingness to read, write, and experiment with language and story. This class is designed to help improve your writing, learn to meaningfully respond to others’ writing, and to help discover new directions for your own writing.

Course Description: This course surveys the Bible as a source of a wide variety of literary patterns, themes, and conventions. This course provides a basis for understanding Biblical references (allusions) in both classical and modern literature. Other topics of discussion may include the formation of a canonical Bible and the inclusion of apocryphal and heretical writings, oral versus literate transmission of sacred history and doctrine, and questions and problems of interpretation. Related literature is included as it pertains to Biblical themes. Writing and discussion opportunities are included in the context of this course. This is a grade weighted course.
