Start math with a fresh mind each day! Math time should be a time of learning and exploring. If math gets frustrating to you, take a break, go on a walk, and try again with fresh eyes.
Keep a math journal! While you are watching the Khan Academy videos, take notes in a math journal. Write down the problems Mr. Khan is leading you through, pause the video and write down ideas and questions, and be sure to jot down the steps he takes to solve various types of problems. These will be helpful to look at later for review!
Talk about math with your parent! Math isn't simply about adding and subtracting numbers to get an answer. Math is filled with patterns and ideas that lead us to new math discoveries every day! Talk about what you're learning with your parent and see what patterns you can find.
Provide a specific dedicated space to complete school-work at home. Consider decorating it and making it a fun, positive place to learn!
Learn alongside your student. Watch the video lessons with your student and have discussions about the new concepts. What makes sense? What was confusing?
Consider having a data tracking sheet for your student to monitor their practice on Khan Academy. How many questions did they attempt before they got 5 correct in a row? Which questions did they miss? Why?
Encourage your student by reminding them that mistakes are the most beneficial part of the learning process.
Allow your student to complete the unit assessments in a genuine assessment setting without the use of calculators, notes, etc. Assessments are a key way to see if a student is mastering a concept.
