Zearn math is a two-part curriculum consisting of a small group lesson led by you and an independent digital lesson that students experience on the computer. Watch the overview video to learn more. Then, if interested, participate in the free classroom implementation training provided by Zearn here.
Log-in to www.zearn.org (You'll need to get your account from the Math Coach or from Sheryl McKay to ensure you are using the paid features for our school)
Click on Roster
Create your class - you only need ONE class even if you teach many grade levels. (Helpful hint: you can share your roster with any other teacher who needs to see your student(s). Here's how.)
Add your students 1 of 2 ways
If your students remember their username and passwords from the past, they can enter those into the zearn.org website and then enter your new class code.
You can add any student to your roster by pressing the "+ add student" button.
When preparing your classroom for Zearn, you'll need to keep the following things in mind:
Your students will need easy access to their computers with their log-in information.
You will need space to teach half of your students while the other half are on computers. Tips from the past:
Some teachers find that they prefer to do their small group lessons on the carpet at a white board while the independent digital lesson students are seated at their desks. This is great for students who do well on the computer with periodic teacher check-ins.
Some teachers switch the above scenario and have students working on computers on the carpet while the small group lesson is being conducted at desks. This is ideal for students who need extra supervision on computers because the teacher typically has better sight lines while teaching the small group lesson.
You will need supplies! Each lesson comes with a Small Group Lesson that has a script for you to see an example of the flow of the lesson. In addition, any supplies that are needed are listed at the top of the small group lesson page. If you'd like a printed version of the Small Group Lesson Guides, please reach out to Shawn Glahn at the Resource Center. She can order them for you from Mimeo.
Spend the first few days of Zearn going over the independent digital lessons so that your class has the ability to work independently while you teach the other half of your class. This anchor chart is a great way to keep a visual in the classroom.
These tags can be printed by clicking on the link above and used in a variety of creative ways to encourage student engagement.
Encourage your students to hit their 4 lesson/week target by using one of these student trackers in your room. Get creative and make it engaging for your students!
For 4-day/week programs, the fifth day of the week should include one of the following options:
Complete a digital Zearn lesson at home or catch up on the 4 required Zearn lessons for the week
Complete a review of a challenging concept for the week
Complete a critical thinking task that allows students to explore deeper mathematical ideas (related or unrelated to what is currently being taught in the mission)
Zearn Math comes with assessments that you are welcome to use with your class. However, teachers often say that these assessments are confusing for their students. Because of that, we created a second version of assessments for Zearn you can use. They are found in our Google Drive Zearn Math folder in your grade level's section in a folder called Alternate Assessments. Note: these assessments are not modified assessments, rather, they are just reformatted to be in age-appropriate formats.
In the Zearn Math folder on Google, you'll also find the daily word problems, optional printed homework pages, and more.
