I make my living as a writer and producer. In both business and art I draw from my Latin training every single day. The six years of Latin I took under the stewardship of Mr. Barnes and Dr. Lowe extended far beyond merely learning a language. Latin is a study in history, poetry, politics, critical thinking and a strong foundation for learning half a dozen modern Romance languages. I drew from our discussions about Caesar when writing "House of Cards." I return to the brilliance of Catullus and Ovid when I hit a creative wall. I think of Virgil when I'm trying to navigate the complexities of human interactions - both professionally and personally. Latin doesn't just prepare you for college, it prepares you for life. Burroughs was formative for me, and that's due in large part to the many ways in which Latin expanded my mind and soul. I encourage every student to seriously consider taking Latin. You will reap the rewards for decades to come.
