Most students who start band have little or no prior music training. We will teach your student everything they need to know, step by step. From how to assemble and care for the instrument to reading music, we will guide your student through the process.
All of the current data indicates that students involved in music education academically outperform their non-musical counterparts. However, the most obvious advantage is learning to play for enjoyment. Other advantages include: Concerts, Contests, Trips, and the opportunity of playing in the Jarrell High School Band!
During the Spring semester, we will host an Instrument Fair. This will be your student’s opportunity to try all of the instruments to begin the selection process. Beginning Band students are divided into classes which include:
Woodwinds: Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Oboe & Bassoon
Brass: Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Baritone, Tuba
Percussion: Snare Drum, Mallet Keyboard, Timpani, Bass Drum & Cymbals
Band is no different than any other curricular area. We ask that your student spend some time with their instrument each and every week.
Cost associated with band depends on which instrument your student chooses. Most parents rent an instrument with an option to buy from a music store dealer. If you wish to purchase or obtain a used instrument for your student that is not from a music dealer, please let us help you evaluate it before you invest. An inferior quality instrument will only handicap your student and could possibly cost you more in repairs than the instrument is worth.
The school provides many of the larger and more expensive instruments such as Tubas, Bassoons, Oboes, Baritones, and French Horns. These instruments are owned by JMS and are available for a rental fee.
