Director of Bands, Jarrell ISD
Scott Lanham is currently the Director of Bands for Jarrell I.S.D. He teaches the High School Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, Instrumental Ensemble class, and percussion at both the middle and high school levels.
This is Mr. Lanham’s 7th year teaching with the Jarrell Independent School District and his twenty-fifth year of teaching. Before teaching in Jarrell, he taught in Copperas Cove, TX, Cameron, TX and Johnson County, KY. Under his direction, his bands have earned numerous Sweepstakes awards in concert and marching competitions as well as earned many other awards. His groups have consistently been UIL Area Marching Contest finalists and have qualified for state marching and concert contests.
Mr. Lanham is a graduate of Capital High School in Charleston, West Virginia. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from the University of Kentucky. While attending the University of Kentucky, he had the privilege of studying under Mr. James Campbell.
His professional affiliations include the Association of Texas Small School Bands, Texas Bandmasters Association, and the Texas Music Educators Association.
When not teaching band, Mr. Lanham loves spending time with his wife, Melinda, his children, Emily and Brennan, and their dog Lily.
Director of Bands, Jarrell Middle School
A native of Olathe, Kansas, Sophie Hynes is in her sixth year of teaching, and her first year in Jarrell ISD. Her love for music started early, growing up with music throughout her childhood and joining band in the 5th grade. Her love for jazz band, marching band and drum corps has helped shape her experiences as a musician and educator.
Throughout her education Mrs. Hynes was an active participant in her school's band programs. She attended the University of Kansas where she performed with many ensembles, including the Wind Ensemble at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC as a bass and contrabass clarinet player. She had the privilege to study clarinet under Dr. Stephanie Zelnick. Mrs. Hynes simultaneously learned the mellophone, auditioned and performed with the Crossmen Drum and Bugle Corps for 2 years before graduating with her Bachelor's Degree in Music Education in 2020.
Before she started teaching in Jarrell, Mrs. Hynes came from Pflugerville ISD where she taught elementary music her first 3 years and spent the last 2 years at Pflugerville Middle School as the assistant band director where she taught beginning flute, clarinet, saxophone, oboe, bassoon as well as the Symphonic band, Honor band and assisted the Wind ensemble. Her honor band received all superior ratings at UIL Concert and Sight Reading evaluation.
Outside of the band hall, Mrs. Hynes enjoy spending time with her husband, Mason and daughter, Harper. She also enjoys spending time outside gardening, exercising and relaxing with family.
Director of Bands, Jarrell Ranch Middle School
Jason Brown is beginning his fourteenth year of band directing and is excited to be joining the community of Jarrell. He believes the band hall should be a space where students will learn more not only about music but also about responsibility, working together, and the value of perseverance. He will be teaching all beginning brass and woodwind classes, co-teaching the non-varsity band, and directing the varsity band.
Mr. Brown began his teaching career at Wallace Middle School in Kyle, Texas from 2012-2017. While at Wallace, Mr. Brown established a tradition of UIL Sweepstakes with the program’s Non-Varsity Bands. In 2016 and 2017, the Wallace Middle School Symphonic Band was named a Commended Winner for the Citation of Excellence Award for Non-Varsity Bands presented by the National Foundation for Music Education.
In 2017, Mr. Brown joined the Cedar Park Middle School Band team. In 2018 the Cedar Park Middle School Symphonic Band under his direction was recognized as a Winner of the Citation of Excellence Award for Non-Varsity Bands by the National Foundation for Music Education. While at Cedar Park Mr. Brown assisted with the band’s 2019 Midwest Conference trip and performance in Chicago, and helped the school through the covid crisis. At the 2020 TMEA convention Cedar Park’s Varsity band was recognized with an 8th place ranking in the state Honor Band Competition. During the 2020-21 school year he taught virtual and in person class simultaneously with all classes and assisted in preparing the band hall for a summer remodel and the following reopening. In the Spring of 2022 the Non-Varsity band under his direction took 3rd place at the esteemed North Texas Festival of Distinction where he was honored to have his band place next to Texas Honor Band winning programs Henry Middle School (1st) and Aledo Middle School (2nd).
In 2022 Mr. Brown took the Head Band position at Harby Junior High in Alvin Texas in order to return to his original life goal of working with students in rural communities. At Harby Junior High Mr. Brown had the privilege of rebuilding the program after a near post-covid collapse. That year he took the bands to a varsity sweepstakes for the first time ever, and the school’s first non-varsity concurrent sweepstakes as well. Since then the program has maintained first divisions at UIL. In 2023 Harby’s remodeled building reopened its doors and Mr. Brown oversaw the program's move.
Mr. Brown holds a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2012. While at Texas State, he served as principal tuba in the Symphonic Band under the direction of Dr. Caroline Beatty. He was also a member of the Bobcat Marching Band for three years, serving as tuba section leader in 2009. Additionally, he served as President of the Theta Alpha chapter of the Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity, and he marched with the 2008 Bluecoats Drum and Bugle Corps.
Mr. Brown’s professional affiliations include the Texas Music Educators Association and the Texas Bandmasters Association. He has also served as a Region Band Clinician and as a staff member at the Texas State University and the Baylor University Band Camps.
Mr. Brown currently lives in Belton with his family. When he is not teaching he enjoys exploring the outdoors, cooking, and gardening. He is grateful to his friends and mentors in the Band Director community who have helped him grow as a professional.
Assistant Director of Bands, Director of Percussion
Nicolas White currently serves as Assistant Director of Bands in the Jarrell Independent School District in Jarrell, TX. He helped open Jarrell Ranch Middle School, where he directs the Symphonic Band. Mr. White has taught beginner tuba, baritone, french horn, and flute, as well as managed all aspects of the percussion program in the district for grades 6–12. Mr. White is originally from Knoxville, Tennessee where he attended Farragut High School. He went on to earn a degree in Music Education from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, where he studied Percussion with Dr. Andrew Bliss & Professor Keith Brown and studied conducting with Dr. Michael Stewart & Dr. Fuller Lyon. While at UTK, Mr. White performed as a member of the Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Symphony Orchestra, Percussion Ensemble, and various other chamber ensembles. He also served as a section leader for the University of Tennessee Pride of the Southland Marching Band.
Mr. White has previously taught in the Knox County School District (TN) at Bearden High School and Gibbs High School. Under his instruction, the Bearden High School Indoor Percussion Ensemble was a consistent WGI Regional Finalist, 5 time East Tennessee Performing Arts Association Medalist, and won numerous high percussion awards during the marching season. In 2022 he moved to Central Texas and taught elementary school music in Round Rock ISD at Callison and Gattis Elementary Schools.
Mr. White’s professional memberships include PAS, ATSSB, TBA, and TMEA. He currently lives in Georgetown, TX with his wife Anna and enjoys going to the movie theater, traveling, playing tennis, and spending time with his dogs.
