HELPFUL TIPS

Tips for Seniors When Applying for Scholarships

  • Volunteer your services in your school and community. Many scholarship applications are looking for this information. Make your efforts sincere and unique whenever possible.

  • Compose a personal resume of your activities, accomplishments, and contributions to include with your application.

  • The application should always be neat and reflect a favorable impression at a glance.

  • When possible, have an English teacher review your essays.

  • Plan carefully the time you will need for an application. You may need recommendations, transcripts, etc. that need advance notice.

  • When asking faculty for letters of recommendation, use the following guidelines:

    • Always ask the faculty member in person.

    • Follow up your verbal request with a written request that provides the deadline, to whom the recommendation should be addressed, a resume and any other information that may be useful in writing an appropriate recommendation for you.

    • Always give the person writing your recommendation at least a two week notice.

    • Thank this person as you may need their help again.

  • Any scholarships that are coordinated through the Student Service office should be in to your counselor at least one week before the scholarship deadline to assure they will be processed on time.

  • Do not turn in applications past a deadline.

Six Signs a Scholarship Could be a Scam

  • "This scholarship is guaranteed or your money back."

  • "You can't get this information anywhere else."

  • "May I have your credit card or bank account number to hold this scholarship."

  • "We'll do all the work."

  • "The scholarship will cost some money."

  • You've been selected "by a national foundation to receive a scholarship" or "you're a finalist" in a contest you have never entered.

Always be cautious about sending money to a service that is guaranteeing that you will either receive a scholarship or an application. Often there is a catch to it, and/or many of the scholarships are already available free of cost.
