The following demographics provide background information about Carroll ISD students and their families.
At roughly 63% of the student population, the majority of Carroll ISD students in the 2019-2020 school year were white. The second highest ethnic group was Asian, at 19.3% (National Center for Education Statistics, n.d.). Statewide, Hispanic students made up the largest ethnic group of public-school students at 52.8% of the population, and white students made up the second-largest at 27% (Division of Research and Analysis, 2020).
The accompanying chart displays the median income of Carroll ISD families, those from neighboring school districts, and families of students in Dallas ISD.
The median household income of parents and families with children in Carroll ISD is $248,900-more than twice the median income of each of its neighboring districts and more than six times the median household income of nearby Dallas ISD families (National Center for Education Statistics, n.d.).
Only 2.3% of Carroll ISD families have an income that falls below the poverty level, and 3.8% qualify for food stamps or SNAP benefits (National Center for Education Statistics, n.d.).
Additionally, transportation is not free to Carroll ISD families. With the exception of students in the special education program, families must purchase a bus pass that costs $256 for one child or $512 for multiple children each year (Transportation Services, n.d.).
The graph above compares the percentages of Carroll ISD students who are economically disadvantaged, are classified as English language learners, and receive special education services with the statewide percentages for the 2019-2020 school year (Texas Education Agency, n.d.). Most notably is the difference between the percentage of Carroll ISD and students statewide who are economically disadvantaged.
The chart above displays the percentages of families with students enrolled in Carroll ISD that own or rent their homes. At 91.1%, a large majority of Carroll ISD families own their homes. An average of 74.6% of families from neighboring districts own their homes. In comparison, 41.5% of Dallas ISD families own their homes (National Center for Education Statistics, n.d.).
The accompanying chart compares the percentages of Carroll ISD and neighboring district families that speak only English at home, those that speak another language in addition to speaking English very well, and those that speak an additional language and do not speak English well.
Although similar to Northwest and Keller ISD, Carroll has the lowest percentage of families that report speaking English less than well (National Center for Education Statistics, n.d.).
Additionally, Carroll ISD students are only required to take two world languages classes and may opt-out entirely by taking computer classes instead (Carroll ISD, 2019).
The accompanying chart details the level of educational attainment by parents of students enrolled in Carroll ISD. Roughly 77% of parents with children enrolled in Carroll ISD hold a bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree. Less than 1% of parents hold less than a high school diploma (National Center for Education Statistics, n.d.).
An average of 51.2% of parents with students in neighboring districts held a bachelor's degree or higher and 6.6% held less than a high school diploma (National Center for Education Statistics, n.d.). For comparison, 10.9% of Dallas ISD parents held a bachelor's degree or higher and 44.4% held less than a high school diploma (National Center for Education Statistics, n.d.).
From the information above, we can extrapolate that the majority of Carroll ISD students benefit from white, wealth, housing, highly-educated parental, and English-speaking privileges. This information is important to keep in mind when considering the support and opposition to the CCAP.
