Geography

Intent, Implementation & Impact

Intent

Lavender Primary School's Geography curriculum aims to nurture inquisitive minds and critical thinkers who are deeply connected to the world. We strive to instil in our students the confidence to engage with their environment like geographers, fostering a sense of curiosity and the ability to critically analyse their surroundings. Our program focuses on:

Aligned with the Kapow Primary scheme, our curriculum meets National Curriculum targets while supporting the 'Understanding the World' goals for our Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) learners. We are dedicated to creating learners who are not only informed about the world but also eager to make a positive impact on it, embodying the resilience, reflection, and independence central to our school's ethos.

Implementation

Lavender Primary School implements a Geography curriculum that aligns with the National Curriculum's four strands—locational knowledge, place knowledge, human and physical geography, and fieldwork skills—integrated with our ethos of fostering curiosity and resilience.

We follow the Kapow Primary scheme's structured progression, ensuring continuous skill and knowledge development from one year to the next, leading to a confident grasp of Geography by the end of each key stage. Our spiral curriculum revisits core concepts with increasing depth, solidifying understanding and application.

In EYFS, we lay the groundwork with activities that prepare children for Key Stage 1, while in Key Stage 1 and 2, enquiry-based units deepen engagement and application of geographical knowledge. Fieldwork is a consistent feature, conducted both on school grounds and through external visits, to enhance practical understanding of the environment.

Our teaching methods are diverse, catering to various learning styles and ensuring inclusivity. Knowledge organisers reinforce factual retention, and comprehensive teacher support—including CPD videos—ensures high-quality delivery of our Geography curriculum. We strive to create informed, empathetic citizens with a strong sense of their role in the world.

Impact

The impact of our Geography curriculum at Lavender Primary School is gauged through ongoing assessments, allowing for real-time tracking of pupil progress and identification of learning gaps. We use lesson-specific assessments, unit quizzes, and knowledge catchers, coupled with opportunities for students to present their work, to measure understanding against objectives.

Our students exit with a solid foundation in Geography, ready for Key Stage 3, embodying curiosity and a comprehensive understanding of the world's human and physical geography. They learn to analyse and compare different regions, understand natural processes and human land use, and use geographical tools and concepts effectively.

Assessment for Learning (AfL) strategies underpin our tracking and evidencing of progress, ensuring a responsive and supportive learning journey. By the end of EYFS, students meet the 'Understanding the World' goals, and by Years 2 and 6, they fulfil the National Curriculum requirements for Geography. Our vibrant learning environment ensures that all students are recognised for their unique progress and abilities.
