How to get to Pavia

BY AIR:

There is no direct service (bus or train) connecting Milan airports -- Milan Linate, Milan Malpensa Terminal 1 and 2, and Milan Bergamo (Orio al Serio) -- to Pavia (and vice versa).

However, Pavia is conveniently reachable from Milan Central Station ("Milano Centrale", Piazza Luigi di Savoia). Connections from Milan airports are available to Milan Central Station, from which you can take a direct train to Pavia (see next section).

If you are landing in Milan Linate, you may also want to consider taking a train to Pavia from Milan Dateo station. The Milan Dateo station can be easily reached from Milan Linate Airport by subway (Milan M4, blue line). In Milan Dateo station, take the direct train S13 to Pavia (operated by Trenord -- see below).

If you are landing in Milan Malpensa, you may also want to consider taking a train to Pavia from Milan Bovisa Politecnico station. The Milan Bovisa Politecnico station can be easily reached from Milan Malpensa Airport with the Malpensa Express train: the Malpensa Express comes in two guises: one has as its final destination Milan Cadorna, the other has as its final destination Milan Central Station. You may take either, as they both stop at Milan Bovisa Politecnico. In Milan Bovisa Politecnico station, take the direct train S13 to Pavia (operated by Trenord -- see below).

Please note that there is no train station in Milan Bergamo Airport, so taxis and shuttles are the only option to directly reach Milan from this airport.

BY TRAIN:

Pavia can be reached in approximately 40 minutes by train from several Milan railway stations, including Central, Lambrate, Rogoredo, Porta Vittoria, Dateo, Greco Pirelli, Porta Garibaldi, and Bovisa Politecnico. For detailed schedules and rates, refer to Trenitalia.

Trains to Pavia are operated by Trenord and Trenitalia. Tickets for trains operated by both Trenord and Trenitalia can be bought online (on the Trenitalia website or smartphone app) or from the several automatic machines available in any train station, including the train station in Milan Malpensa airport. We strongly recommend buying online tickets.

If you are in any of the following train stations in Milan (Bovisa Politecnico, Porta Garibaldi, Dateo, Porta Vittoria, Rogoredo), the train line S13 operated by Trenord is the best option to get to Pavia. Please note that Pavia is the final destination of train line S13, and that there is only one station in Pavia, so you can't miss it. Make sure not to get off at Certosa di Pavia, which is a different village.

The University School of Advanced Studies IUSS Pavia is located in the XII-century Palazzo del Broletto. The building is placed in Piazza della Vittoria (formerly Piazza Grande), and it's the oldest palace in the whole of Lombardy. This palace was the residence of Pavia's bishop; after following buildups, it became Pavia's town hall. The Palazzo del Broletto has a collonaded inner courtyard with a beautiful view of the majestic apsis of the Cathedral.
