English Language Development (ELD)
In California, home to more than one million English learner students, English language development has always been a top priority. Irvine High School's ELD program provides rigorous instruction guided by the California English Language Development Standards (CA ELD Standards). By maintaining California’s commitment to providing English learner students with a high-quality program that will enable them to attain proficiency in English, students will be able to develop essential skills and confidence in listening, speaking, reading, and writing that are at the core of achievement inside and outside the classroom.
ELD 1 (English Language Development 1)
Credits: 10
Recommended placement: Level 1 on ELPAC
English Language Development (ELD) 1 utilizes both Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and California English Language Development Standards (CA ELD Standards) to guide instruction. In this class, heavy emphasis will be placed on vocabulary acquisition, basic grammar instruction, phonics and pronunciation practice, and other supports beginning English speakers will need to be successful in speaking, reading, listening, and writing basic English.
ELD 2 (English Language Development 2)
Credits: 5
Recommended placement: Low to mid Level 2 on the ELPAC, or 70% or better in the previous course
English Language Development (ELD) 2 utilizes both Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and California English Language Development Standards (CA ELD Standards) to guide instruction. In this class, heavy emphasis will be placed on vocabulary acquisition, intermediate grammar instruction, pronunciation practice, debate, oral presentations, and other supports English speakers at the "Expanding" proficiency level will need to be successful in speaking, reading, listening, and writing basic English.
ELD 3 (English Language Development 3)
Credits: 5
Recommended placement: High Level 2 or low Level 3 on the ELPAC, or 70% or better in the previous course
English Language Development (ELD) 3 utilizes both Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and California English Language Development Standards (CA ELD Standards) to guide instruction. In this class, heavy emphasis will be placed on vocabulary acquisition, advanced grammar instruction, pronunciation practice, debate, oral presentations, and other supports English speakers at the "Expanding-Bridging" proficiency level will need to be successful in speaking, reading, listening, and writing basic English.
ELA SKILLS (English Language Arts Skills)
Credits: 5
Non College Prep Course
In this small group class, English Language Learners who are identified as needing additional support in language or other academic subjects will receive individualized attention from staff members with subject matter expertise. ELA Skills students will be instructed in essay writing, academic vocabulary, test taking strategies, time management, and other critical skills needed for high school and beyond.
