SHCTC's First Annual "Dunk Your Director" Day

Dunk Tank 21-22.mp4

On Monday, May 9, 2022, Senior students at the CTC were thrilled to enjoy the First Annual "Dunk Your Director" Day. The students earned this reward by participating in "Sr. Interview Days" held at the school on May 4 & 5, 2022. Community members are invited into the school to hold mock interviews with the students. The students' also use this opportunity to present their Digital Portfolios, and are given constructive feedback based on their performances. All around the students get a glimpse of real life experience before they graduate and community members gain an insight of the new generations entering the workforce at the end of the event. The culinary students prepare and serve a fantastic lunch to the members of the community that volunteer their time to come help our students with this event.

This year Mr. Young graciously agreed to allow the top two students with the highest scored interviews from each shop in both the morning and afternoon sessions, their opportunity to test their aim and a chance to get him wet!

Georgia Pacific, Mt. Jewett Plant sponsored the event by provided both sessions pizza and soda. They also provided gifts for the CTC's Annual Awards Assembly and prizes to be given to underclassman throughout the year next year. They gave a presentation about the jobs and careers they have available at their site and are committed to helping our students succeed in any way they can. Thank you very much Georgia Pacific! We look forward to a lasting partnership.

SkillsUSA is a student organization that celebrates career readiness. It is based upon a framework, which combines personal, workplace, and technical skills. Throughout the year, students work with their teachers and peers to build skills that can help propel them directly into the workforce or post secondary education. The shops at the CTC include Heath Assistance, Homeland Security, Early Childhood Education, Networking, Culinary, Engineering, Automotive, Heavy Equipment Maintenance, Building Construction, and Welding. In these shops, the students not only learn how to perform the tasks specific to that trade, they also learn lifelong skills in leadership, civic mindedness, resume building, prioritization, communication, and teamwork. SkillsUSA is a forum in which select students can showcase these special skills on a much larger scale.

These students have overcome many challenges in preparing for the competition. Our teams faced the special obstacle of attending different home school districts, as well as the challenge of attending CTC at different times. In order to prepare for their competitions, they had to collaborate with other shops, community members, and teachers in the creation of their projects. In addition, many of these students have jobs that have made adjustments to accommodate students in this event. This required added responsibility and planning on the part of the student. Students have worked hard to develop teamwork and leadership skills while at the CTC. SkillsUSA is an exciting career building opportunity. Seneca Highlands CTC is very proud to be a part of the development of our communities’ future leaders.

Seneca Highlands Career and Technical Center’s Esports Team Celebrates First Victory

Congratulations to our SHCTC "Screaming Eagles B" Esports Team on their first Rocket League competition win!

Ben Torrey (12, NPSD) , Ryan Moore (10, CCSD), and AJ Herring (11, NPSD) swept the Mount Saint Joseph Academy "Rocket League #2" team, 3-0, in pre-season play!

The Screaming Eagles, currently composed of three, three-student squads (and substitutes), will compete in a Fall and Spring Season on the Rocket League/Epic Games platform. Due to the fact that the PIAA has not yet sanctioned esports, the team will be utilizing the service at playvs.com as the organizing body.

Students are able to play/practice (a 3.5+ hour weekly commitment) from home or in the evenings at the CTC. They are also permitted to utilize their current gaming consoles (XBox/Playstation), personal computers, and peripherals, or those at the CTC.

There are no additional costs associated with Rocket League play as organized through playvs.com. For more information, please contact “Coach” Brent Bryant at bbryant@iu9ctc.org or (814) 642-2573.

In their coach’s manual PlayVS provides the following explanations of Esports and their benefits:

“What are esports?

Esports, short for electronic sports, is a collective term that describes organized competitive video gaming, where individuals use video game consoles, PC’s, or mobile phones to play popular video game titles against other esports teams.

Why are esports beneficial to your students?

Esports provides many benefits to students, and unlocks opportunities that never existed before, including:

Gateway to other fields

The gaming industry intersects with other large, thriving industries like entertainment and technology. Familiarity with the gaming ecosystem and esports landscape builds a student’s knowledge-base for what’s possible and where a career can take them.

Scholastic benefits

Engaged students perform better in school. Esports uniquely appeals to and engages a wider audience, including co-ed teams. For many of our players, esports is the first time they’ve participated in a coached, athletic activity

College scholarships

Collegiate esports is exploding, which translates into tens of millions of dollars in scholarships every year. Every season, more and more high performing players on our platform get snapped up by top collegiate esports programs.

Team values

Esports players learn values like teamwork, discipline, and hard work (practicing isn’t always easy). They also learn to take direction from coaches, humility, and how to win and lose with grace.

Health and well-being

Esports players have a sense of belonging and purpose on a team, just like athletes of other sports. Gamers also consider being in a clan or esports team a second family. They forge friendships that go beyond gaming. Many of these students don’t excel in traditional sports and gaming opens up a world to others who are just like them.

Potential careers

Esports provides students the perfect entryway to the booming video game industry. Gaming companies, like our partner Riot Games, offer exciting career opportunities across the entire business and creative spectrum.”

Seneca Highlands Career and Technical Center Receives Grant to Expand Transformative High School Engineering Program from Project Lead The Way

PLTW’s programs will provide hands-on, interdisciplinary STEM-based curriculum that uniquely prepares students for life beyond the classroom.

Seneca Highlands Career and Technical Center announced today that it will offer Project Lead The Way’s (PLTW) high school program, PLTW Engineering. The opportunity is made possible through a partnership between Ardagh Group, a global supplier of infinitely-recyclable metal and glass consumer packaging, and PLTW, a nonprofit organization that offers transformative classroom and learning experiences for PreK-12 students. Seneca Highlands Career and Technical Center is joining more than 12,200 schools across the U.S. providing opportunities for brighter futures for all students.

Seneca Highlands Career and Technical Center will use funds from the grant to expand its PLTW Engineering program, a key component of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education, and help cover annual program fees, teacher professional development, and required classroom equipment and materials.

This grant will provide unique opportunities for Pre-engineering students to earn industry recognized credentials, experience advanced curriculum and engage in hands-on learning related to advanced manufacturing. PLTW facilitates training for educators to deliver curriculum and competencies required for students to complete the state approved program of study. In addition to this advanced training, student will experience a variety of career pathways and opportunities aligned with our region and employers.

This particular PLTW expansion is made possible by a grant from Ardagh, which has a strong presence in the region. “Ardagh is a major employer in all of the communities in which we operate across the Americas and Europe,” said Paul Coulson, Chairman and CEO, Ardagh Group. “We are proud to employ more than 6,000 skilled people in 24 of our locations. Social sustainability is at the core of our sustainability strategy. We recognize the critical role education, and access to education, plays in ensuring equal opportunities and in building successful, vibrant communities. We expect to invest $50 million over ten years to support education in our U.S. communities. We are delighted to announce our first partnership in this initiative with PLTW and are making an initial investment of $12 million in this multi-year, impactful program. Ardagh’s investment will drive quality STEM education in our U.S. communities that are key to economic development, as well as to our business over the long term.”

Beginning with the school year 2021-22 school year, Seneca Highlands Career and Technical Center will offer PLTW Engineering funded through a $50,000 grant from Ardagh. High school is the time when students are planning for life beyond the classroom. Through PLTW Engineering, Seneca Highlands Career and Technical Center’s students step into the role of an engineer, adopt a problem-solving mindset, and engage in compelling, real-world challenges that help them become better collaborators and thinkers. From launching space explorations to delivering safe, clean water to communities, engineers find solutions to pressing problems and turn their ideas into reality. Through PLTW Engineering, students will not only build knowledge and skills in engineering but will also develop essential skills such as problem solving, critical and creative thinking, communication, collaboration, and perseverance they will use for the rest of their lives, on any career path they take.

“PLTW is proud to partner with Seneca Highlands Career and Technical Center to inspire students to excel in math and science,” said Dr. Vince Bertram, PLTW President and CEO. “Together, we’re empowering millions of young people to become inspired problem solvers. We’re passionate about equipping the next generation of students with the in-demand, real-world knowledge and skills they need to go further whatever path they choose.”

PLTW programs also include professional development opportunities that provide teachers with the support and resources they need to devote more time to inspiring students, as well as collaborative cohort-based opportunities that build lasting professional learning communities. Through PLTW Core Training, teachers will encounter best-in-class experiences that keep them on the forefront of how to prepare students for the demands of tomorrow.

SHCTC Students Teach Virtually

First year Early Childhood Education students at the Seneca Highlands Career and Technical Center taught virtually to students in Olean, New York, at Southern Tier Catholic School on February 23, 2021.

Lesson plans were designed by the CTC pupils around the theme of Black History Month. Activities were challenging to teach online according to many of the students, but it was rewarding to work with the STCS pupils and teachers to gain experience and evidence for our portfolios.

Thank you to Beth Ann Owens, Sarah Wheaton, and Amber Hanophy from Southern Tier Catholic School for their patience, kindness, and their students for their participation!!

Jordan

SHCTC Student, Jordan Glover, Nominated as Presidential Scholar for Career & Technical Education

February is Career and Technical Education month and one particular honor that extends from this would be the Presidential Scholars Program. This program began in 1964, by executive order of the President, to provide recognition and honor to some of the nation’s most distinguished high school seniors. In 1979, it extended to add in visual, performing, and creative arts. Then, in 2015, this program opened the doors for recognition for those students in career and technical education that demonstrate ability and accomplishment. The Presidential Scholars Award is recognition of students who excel overall in academic, technical, and personal skills areas. To apply for the award, a rigorous nomination process was completed by her health assistant teacher using evidence gleaned from Jordan’s Career Portfolio. After she was selected as a nominee by a state committee, she was able to present her reasons for choosing Career and Technical Education as her pathway to her selected career.

Mrs. Lana Barth chose to nominate Jordan based on her hard work and her determination to take advantage of the many opportunities provided to her at the CTC. She has shown admirable academic achievement through enrollment in the National Honor Society at her homeschool and in the National Technical Honor Society at the CTC. She has also taken advantage of 6 dual enrollment credits offered at the CTC and also several college credits in her homeschool. Jordan participated in the District 10 SkillsUSA competition last year, winning a bronze medal for her career portfolio development. Jordan shows teamwork and support of fellow classmates through her involvement in Safety Committee, CTC Student Committee, and her diligence in creation of games and study activities that benefited all students in morning and afternoon sessions of the health assistance program. Jordan was one of the first CTC students to develop a complete online career portfolio. Her portfolio has been used as a teaching tool for other students and teachers in several surrounding schools. Since then, she has continued to improve her portfolio even further. She has demonstrated community awareness through joining her local ambulance association as a volunteer.

Currently, Jordan is part of the Capstone program at UPMC Cole as a Food Service Attendant. This program allows Jordan to attend school part of the day and go to work at UPMC Cole the second half when she would normally be at the CTC. She plans on attending an undecided university to achieve her Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing. Jordan’s career goal is to become a Pediatrician.

Seneca Highlands CTC is proud to be represented by Jordan in such a prestigious award. This demonstrates just some of the advantages to students who are serious about their futures. This award also emphasizes that not only does Career and Technical education provide a step up for students, it also adds the element of community involvement.
