Goals

Internship Goals

  1. My first goal will be to encourage myself to learn how to build professional relationships. What will you do at the internship to achieve this goal? My internship being that it's in a more professional setting, I think that setting will help me be able to learn and accommodate myself to being used to being around professional people and knowing how to approach them properly to build that professional relationship. With my internship being mostly online right now I haven't had the chance to talk to more people around the office.

  2. My second goal is to try to take the lead. What will you do at the internship to achieve this goal? I always second guess myself and that makes me not express what I'm thinking or if I have a different perspective from someone else, being that I'm working with other people and alone at times being able to take the lead with a certain research assignment or express my opinion comfortably at the research site will help me reach my goal. Most of the work I've been doing has been independent work, but when I get the chance to take the lead, I will definitely try to.

  3. My third goal is time management. What will you do at the internship to achieve this goal? Being that I will have responsibilities at my internship that is very important to the research that is being done, I will have to manage my time better, and having the internship will keep me on track to not slack. Balancing everything was difficult at first and still kind of is but I'm working on my time management and keeping myself on track.

Other goals I have for professional growth for this year, are to fully change my closet and try to keep it more business casual outfits. With my internship being mostly online as of now I haven't had to dress up but I know eventually I will and my closet is not suited for that. I think doing some shopping and updating my closet and dressing more business casual just to get used to it would be helpful because I like comfy clothes but I know in a future workplace business casual will be my work outfit on a daily basis. Another goal would be to attend more networking events. I recently attended a networking event and it was very resourceful. I got to meet new people in different work fields, as well as two people who graduated with my current degree plan. In a way putting myself out there more. I think doing these tasks and pushing myself out of my comfort zone will help me more in all aspects, not just professionally, but also academically and personally. t

Career Goals

My career goal is to graduate with my Health Services Management degree. I'm still debating grad school, but it's still an option, I would like to have. Otherwise, I would want to start at an entry-level job and work my way up. Though recently I met people who graduated with the degree I'm working on and they are doing something totally different. To me, that was very eye-opening. This person in the real adult life, with a real adult professional job, and she was telling us that she still at times doesn't know what she is doing careerwise, so nothing is set, I could be getting a degree in a certain field but end up working in a whole different field. That gave me some certainty that even if my current career goals are not fully established it's fine because everything can change. So keeping an open perspective in work fields.

My current career goal is to graduate with my bachelor's degree. I believe that when doing that I will be accomplishing a big goal as I'm the first person in my family to attend college. I'm not yet sure about graduate school, but it's definitely an option I'm looking into. I know the 5- year plan offered here on campus, the Accelerated BSHSM - MHA Program. So I've been looking into that or just regular grad school afterward, with maybe a gap year. I did choose my career goals based on what I'm passionate about because I see myself working in this field in the future. At first, I wasn't so sure but when I got deeper into the coursework I understand it, and as stated, I see myself working in this field. What I'm doing to see if these goals fit my strengths and are worth working towards, is putting myself out there. I'm involved on campus, I have two E- Board positions and I feel that by putting myself out there I've grown more as an individual and as a professional. Another way I can grow or explore this pathway is to network with more HSM students or even graduates. See their point of view, see what they are doing with their degrees, and maybe if they have any advice.

What I need to do this semester to eventually reach my goals is stay involved in organizations, and get a summer internship. I need to gain more leadership skills. I'm currently taking a leadership/management class, so I want to put to use what I have been learning.

My goals have changed from when I applied because I was still in the pre-nursing pathway and I changed my major. A big career goal would be getting into the MHA and finishing my bachelor's and master's degrees in 5 years. This would be a big career accomplishment because that is what I ultimately have been working for. I also want a minor, so I added an eight-week class to accomplish that.

My time at this internship has not affected my career goals, but it has given me a perspective in the research field. This learning opportunity is something that I will keep in mind, especially when applying for other internships during the fall.

I feel confident about my self-knowledge and preferences and use that to make career-related decisions. I do have to explore what's available as an HSM major, career field-wise, so when I apply to the MHA accelerated track I can give a sure answer of what I want to do.

An update for my career goals is I actually did get a summer internship. I got a summer internship at United HealthGroup as a Bilingual Sales Representative. I'm excited to get this new perspective on the healthcare field as well as to get my own cubicle. For the rest of my time at IUPUI, I hope to stay involved on campus and also try to get a fall internship, if not then just an on-campus job. My last final goal for this semester is to try to get a 4.0 but I'm struggling a little bit in my micro-econ class, but hopefully, I can see it through and pass the class.
