I chose my major because I want to work in the healthcare industry but just not on the clinical side. So I decided I would explore the business side of the healthcare industry. I believe there are a lot of things I can do with this degree and will eventually get to explore a new side of healthcare. When people think of hospitals, they think of doctors, nurses, and the clinical team in general, but there is a whole business side of people who keep the hospital running.
I consider myself a team player. Though I've been pushing myself on being more of a leader, it's something that as an individual, I'm working on. I also like seeing other people's points of view and understanding their views. Throughout my internship, I believe I was a team player. I did my part of the work and helped out when I knew what I was talking about. As a professional, I would say I'm more at my branding era and constantly connecting and networking with other professionals around me. I have grown into this because I really noticed how important it is to network and keep those strong connections.
Skills:
Computer proficiency
Communication skills
Organizational know-how
Collaboration talent
Problem-solving abilities
So far my work experience has been great. I've been doing mostly independent, at my own pace work. Since the first weeks have been more about obtaining certifications from CITI training and finishing up the reading for the research topics. My experience so far has taught me to multitask even better and to stay on top of my tasks.
Skills and strengths I already have would be being organized, working well with teams, and I'm responsible. Tasks I know I enjoy doing are working together in teams that I know we will be productive, as well as working alone in tasks I know I can exceed by myself, or difficult takes and be able to find resources or helpful staff, cause at times I know I can struggle with asking for help. Areas of growth would be working on my nerves when presenting or having to speak and introduce myself to more professional people. I believe practicing my elevator speech more often will help me get used to it and be able to retrain the information, so when it comes time to present it, the elevator speech would come more naturally.
Aside from my LHSI internship experience, other experiences I have...... ⬇︎⬇︎⬇︎
As the treasurer, I oversee the financial affairs of the organization. Being part of the executive board has not only shown me to manage school and the organization, but it has also taught me to plan and lead events. The type of events we hold are either professional events, fun events, or educational events.
As the treasurer and sister of the Oh! So! Fli! Xi chapter of Gamma Phi Omega here at the IUPUI campus not only have I grown as a person but also as a professional. I manage the financial affairs of the organization, and also lead events for my organization. We held a campout event to raise awareness about Domestic Violence. We also raised money and collected any clothes, toiletries, etc. We raised a total of $480.
Avanzando Through College which translates to Advancing Through College is a program set up for a select cohort of 31 students to help us on our journey as first-generation Latinx students at a PWI. I learned a lot about how to market my professional identity. I also created my LinkedIn page during a workshop. The picture above is half of our cohort on a hybrid meeting.
Project Ready was a program I was part of at Warren Central High School, located on the east side of Indianapolis. This program was part of the Indianapolis Urban League, during the program we got coaching from our mentors on how to apply for college and apply for scholarships. We also went on college tours, educational trips, and visited work environments.
During my junior and senior year at high school, I took classes and did 75+ clinical hours for my CNA license. This experience taught me a lot of bedside skills. Also, communication skills, as I had to report back to the nurse in charge. Another skill is teamwork because I had to work alongside my classmates to practice procedures on each other. The picture above is moments after I passed my certification for CNA.
I've worked at McDonald's since my junior year of school and work there during my school breaks. Working here has exposed me to a lot of customer service skills. A lot of teamwork and communication skills, as we work as a team to get the drive-through moving. We aim for one minute thirty seconds for breakfast times. Pictured above is my "work family".
