About the Internship:
My job at the early psychosis Prevention and Recovery Center consists of transcribing data from a research study being conducted that focuses on how younger people diagnosed with schizophrenia respond to MERIT therapy and determining whether it can help to decrease both their positive and negative symptoms of the mental illness. We are looking to extend previously done research to a younger community to get them started on treatment sooner which will, in turn, improve their chances of recovery.
Workplace:
My strengths right now in the workplace consist of focusing on a specific task until it is completed, because I only work about two hours a day, I make sure that I am working efficiently in those two hours. One way I would like to grow as a teammate to my coworkers this year would just be getting to know them better and finding ways to help them out even if it is not related to the work I am assigned to. Because my work consists of listening to audio recordings, it is easy to just walk in, put my headphones on and stay in my section until I am done; however, I would like to make sure that I am also being a good teammate to everyone else in the office and forming lasting relationships.
Successes and Challenges:
Being able to expand my knowledge in the details of planning and start-up of a funded study was a success! I asked to join meetings whenever I could, leading to my coworkers extending out offers and invitations to join on new experiences even if it was as simple as observing recruitment. Because of them, I was able to get a well-rounded view of the process ranging from grant renewal applications, communicating with PI's, and recruitment of participants.
Some challenges did arise throughout my time; however, these were always met with flexibility and understanding from supervisors and coworkers. For example, towards the end of the year, it became harder to find time to make it to work and to meet with my supervisor because of both our buys schedules. We were able to compromise on working remotely most days and began communicating through email more, rather than weekly meetings, which ended up working well for the both of us.
