I was born and raised in Chicago, IL for the beginning years of my life. My family and I moved to Indiana when I was around 6 years old so I am technically considered a hoosier because I have lived in Indiana for over 13 years. I consider myself a lifelong learner due to my love of travel and learning about history (my own and others). During my time at IUPUI I have been given many opportunities to research various cultures through the Olaniyan Scholars Undergraduate Research Program and IUSD's Dental Summer Undergraduate Research Program. I have also been given the opportunity to travel to important cultural and historical sites such as The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center Museum, The Motown Museum, and the Charles H. Wright Museum and my ultimate trip to Ghana.
While moving within my life I've had the opportunity to meet people of various backgrounds, ethnicities, cultures and life experiences. I love learning about the sciences and engaging in hands on activities that allow to me to further my knowledge. I was involved in a STEM camp at IU Bloomington during my junior year in high school and I also attended a career based high school that allowed me to develop and continue to grow my interest in the field of Dentistry. When thinking of my future career I knew I wanted to incorporate that aspect of my life into my future career goal, therefore I plan on becoming a traveling dentist. I will be able to do the things that I love while helping others and continually learning about various cultures and I really enjoy learning about diverse communities and I believe that having a better understanding of different groups and ethnicities will benefit me in my future career.
I am a first generation college student, 21st Century scholar, Olaniyan Scholar and the oldest sibling in my family. Although as a child I was never forced to attend college oneday I knew that it was something that I wanted to experience. I have always enjoyed school and learning and although college was forced for me to attend I knew it was something that I wanted to do. I really enjoy biology and learning about the intricacies of life, which is why I knew I would continue to explore this passion in college.
Being the oldest child responsibility is something that I has been bestowed upon me from a young age. Having the duty of being the older sibiling I am able to use my skill of responsibility in my currets jobs that I hold along with carrying this skill with me into my internship. Allowing myself to complete my tasks when asked, communicate with my supervisor on any issues or questions I may have and making sure that I ask for help when needed.
I consider myself a natural born leader and I have displayed this in many aspects of my life. While being in college I have been given many opportunities to present my skills as a leader and also grow my skill as well. While working as a 21st Century Scholars peer mentor I lead my mentees through many helpful workshops that provided them with useful resources. I also served as a confidant for anything that my mentees were willing to share and provide feedback or guidance if needed.
Professionalism is something that I am continually improving upon and I have been able to provide my professionalism skills within my internship site. I utilized my skill when I needed to switch the times that I would come into the lab due to an exam or a school related circumstances. I would make sure to notify my supervisor within a timely manner and make sure that it was alright that I switched the time that I come in. I would also ensure that I communicate with my supervisor about another time when I could come into the lab.
