Ishanti Gangopadhyay, Ph.D
Director and Principal Investigator
Ishanti grew up in India where she completed her primary and secondary schooling, and then received her B.A. in Psychology from Clark University, Massachusetts in 2008. Following her college years, she was a research technician at the Somatosensory Lab at Johns Hopkins University from 2008-2010 and a research assistant at the Cognitive Neurology/Neuropsychology Lab at the JHU medical campus from 2010-2012. Here, she conducted research on language processing in individuals with autism using ERP and eye-tracking methods
In 2019, Ishanti earned her Ph.D in Communication Sciences and Disorders from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her graduate training centered on the relationship between language and cognition in bilingual children, and in children with ASD and Developmental Language Disorder (DLD). Her dissertation, funded by the National Science Foundation, examined the impact of social-pragmatic cues on word learning in monolingual and bilingual children. Subsequently, as a postdoctoral researcher in the LEARN Lab at New York University, she studied language development and language learning in children with ASD from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

Melanie Albers
Lead Research Assistant
Melanie is from Crown Point, Indiana and is currently a senior at Indiana University. She is studying Speech-Language Pathology with minors in Spanish and psychology and plans to pursue a master’s degree. Melanie is looking to expand her knowledge within monolingual & bilingual communities while working with children in the LEMuR Lab. She is eager to research how bilingualism and ASD impacts novel word retention skills. In Melanie’s free time she enjoys hiking and finding new restaurants to try!
Nicole Garcia
Lead Research Assistant
Nicole is from Avon, Indiana and graduated from Indiana University in 2018 where she obtained a B.A. in Psychology with a minor in Spanish. After graduating, Nicole worked in a school and a clinic where she gained a new passion for working with kids who are bilingual and have autism. Nicole plans on pursuing a master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology with specializations in ASD and bilingualism. She is excited to be a part of the LEMuR lab and help disseminate information to the community! In Nicole’s free time, she enjoys helping others, playing with her dog, traveling, eating and baking, and trying new activities such as bouldering or hikes with friends.
Shalini Banerjee
Lead Research Assistant
Shalini is from Bangalore, India, and is a doctoral student in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences. She completed her master’s in Speech-Language Pathology from the Manipal Academy of Higher Education, India, and her bachelor’s degree in Speech and hearing Sciences from the All India Institute of Speech and Hearing, Mysore. After graduating, Shalini worked as a pediatric speech-language pathologist in an interdisciplinary setup in India. She is interested in understanding in detail the factors that contribute to language learning in children with or without language impairments from bilingual backgrounds. Specifically curious to explore the role of executive functions and social communication skills in language learning. In her free time, Shalini loves exercising, traveling, learning about different cultures, and trying out new cuisines.
Carlee Jones
Masters Research Assistant
Originally from Edgewood, Kentucky, Carlee graduated from Eastern Michigan University with a B.S. in Communication Sciences and Disorders and a B.A. in Spanish in 2021. She is currently a student in the Master’s program for Speech-Language Pathology at IU. Carlee is interested in ASD, bilingualism, and language development in monolingual and bilingual children. She is excited to learn more about these interests while working in the LEMuR Lab! Carlee enjoys spending time with friends and family, exercising, and trying new foods and restaurants.
Joanna Stochitoiu
Masters Research Assistant
Joanna is from South Bend, Indiana and is currently a student in the Master’s of Speech-Language Pathology program at Indiana University, Bloomington. She is interested in learning more about the effects of bilingualism in language development and how different languages interact with each other. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with friends and family, taking walks with her dog, and painting.
Cassandra Lopez
Masters Research Assistant
Cassandra is from Chicago, Illinois and is currently a graduate student pursuing a Master’s in Speech-Language Pathology on the Bilingual Track at Indiana University in Bloomington. She is interested in the language development of typically and atypically developing bilingual children. She is also interested in increasing parental understanding of communication disorders among multicultural families. Cassandra is excited to continue her research experience at the LEMuR Lab and is looking forward to learning more about bilingualism! In her free time, she enjoys crafting, watching shows, and spending time with close friends.
Megan Schulze
Masters Research Assistant
Megan is from St. Cloud, Minnesota, and she graduated from the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire in 2019, with a B.S. in Communication Sciences and Disorders. Currently, she is a graduate student in the Speech-Language Pathology Master's program at Indiana University in Bloomington. Her research interests include social communication and cognition, and she is currently pursuing a master's thesis in cognitive and linguistic predictors of communicative skills in bilingual children. In her free time, she enjoys exploring the area, making cookies, and reading.
Hannah Brownd
Undergraduate Research Assistant
Hannah is from Crown Point, IN and is currently a junior at Indiana University. She is studying speech, language, and hearing sciences as well as psychology with a Spanish minor. She is excited to extend her previous experience of working with children to the research of the LEMuR Lab. In her free time, Hannah enjoys reading, exercising, and spending time with friends and family.
Colten Mouzin
Undergraduate Research Assistant
Colten is from Vincennes, Indiana and is currently a junior at Indiana University. He is studying Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences while also pursuing minors in History and Spanish. Colten is excited to gain experience in a research setting while also learning about the effects of monolingualism and bilingualism in language development. In his free time Colten enjoys traveling, hiking, playing basketball, and trying new restaurants.
Anna Kate Spirtas
Undergraduate Research Assistant
Anna is from St. Louis, MO and is currently a senior at Indiana University. She is majoring in speech, language, and hearing sciences as well as minoring in psychology. She is proud to be a part of the LEMuR Lab while also working independently on her Honors project under the guidance of Dr. Gangopadhyay. The project is a survey study that aims to examine current attitudes and beliefs towards bilingualism/multilingualism in children with typical and atypical development. She is excited to watch this project take off as they plan to launch their online survey very soon! Outside of the school environment, she enjoys checking in with my family and friends back home, taking long walks on sunny days, and exploring new restaurants around Bloomington.
Abigail Bostrack
Undergraduate Research Assistant
Abigail is from Round Lake, Illinois and is currently a sophomore at Indiana University. She is studying Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences as well as hoping to minor in Sign Language. Abigail is planning to go back to school after her four years to get a master's degree in Speech Pathology. She is excited to work in the LEMur Lab and learn more about language development in monolingual and bilingual children! Abigail spends her free time playing tennis, exploring new coffee shops, and going on walks with friends!
Aylivia Melon
Undergraduate Research Assistant
Aylivia is from Marion, Indiana and is currently a junior at Indiana University. She is studying Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences, while also working to earn a minor in ASL. Aylivia is excited to gain research experience and interact with children of various cultural backgrounds in the LEMuR Lab! In her free time, she enjoys playing volleyball, painting, and spending time with friends and family.
Josie Freeman
Undergraduate Research Assistant
Josie is from Newburgh, Indiana and is currently a junior at Indiana University. She is studying Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences. She is excited to get more research experience and learn more about language development in monolingual and bilingual children! Her goal is to work as an SLP in the future and spend time with children from all different backgrounds. In her free time, she enjoys going to her hometown to visit her little brother, exercising, and spending time with friends!
