In the Spring of 2023, I interned at OnTarget, a CPA firm based in Indianapolis. This experience provided me with practical knowledge and skills in a dynamic environment, allowing me to bridge the gap between academic theory and real-world application.
During my time at OnTarget, I managed the front desk, where I developed strong customer service abilities and learned the nuances of office management. This role required me to interact with clients, ensuring a welcoming atmosphere and addressing inquiries effectively. Through these interactions, I honed my communication skills, learning to adapt my approach to different audiences and fostering positive relationships.
In addition to front desk duties, I gained hands-on experience in filing documents into the firm’s system and preparing 1040 tax returns. This exposure deepened my understanding of tax preparation and compliance, enhancing my technical proficiency in tax-related matters. I became adept at navigating tax software and understanding the intricacies of filing requirements, which are essential for any future roles in accounting or finance.
Despite the relatively short duration of my internship, I acquired valuable hard skills, including proficiency in tax preparation, document management, and data entry. Moreover, I enhanced my soft skills, such as adaptability and time management, as I learned to work efficiently under the pressure of the busy season. The fast-paced environment taught me how to prioritize tasks effectively, ensuring deadlines were met without compromising quality.
This internship not only equipped me with a solid foundation for my career but also instilled a strong sense of dedication and professionalism. The combination of technical expertise and interpersonal skills I developed will enable me to handle accounting tasks effectively and thrive in high-pressure situations. As I move forward in my career, I am eager to leverage these experiences and skills to make meaningful contributions to future employers in the accounting and finance sectors.
