During my summer internship at Exelon in 2024, I had the opportunity to work with one of Chicago's premier utility companies, specializing in energy distribution. As an audit intern, my primary responsibilities included testing Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) controls across Exelon’s distribution entities. This role required collaboration with various teams to identify and resolve compliance issues, ensuring operational efficiency throughout the organization. I also contributed to innovative projects aimed at enhancing company processes, which allowed me to gain valuable technical skills in SOX compliance testing and a solid understanding of audit procedures. These competencies are crucial for my future roles in finance, accounting, and auditing, as they bolster my capabilities in financial analysis and business consulting.
Beyond technical skills, my internship significantly improved my soft skills. Working with diverse teams taught me the importance of effective communication in fostering teamwork and driving project success. I honed my time management abilities by consistently meeting strict deadlines, a vital skill for managing multiple responsibilities in any professional setting. Participating in team-building activities—such as attending a Cubs game, visiting the zoo, and touring the control room—helped me balance work with engaging experiences, enriching my overall professional development. One standout project involved collaborating with fellow interns in finance to address the challenges posed by AI and data centers. This project required us to engage with various stakeholders to assess the viability of our proposed solutions. I authored a paper suggesting the use of transcription software to streamline communication with external auditors, demonstrating my initiative and innovative thinking.
Overall, the skills and experiences I gained during my internship at Exelon will be instrumental in my future career, particularly in areas requiring analytical abilities, collaborative teamwork, and forward-thinking solutions.
