Introduction
Reflecting on my experiences with team projects and professional expectations has shown me how important collaboration, communication, and professionalism are in both academic and future work settings. After exploring my articles of choice, I realized that contributing fairly, actively engaging with teammates, and presenting myself thoughtfully are skills that require conscious effort. These insights have helped me understand how to balance individuality with professionalism while supporting my team’s success.
How to better progress
After reading “Does Team Formation Impact Student Performance, Effort and Attitudes in a College Course Employing Collaborative Learning?”, I recognized that my team would mostly align with the random team category. Many of my peers already had preferred teammates, while I, being more reserved, did not. I ended up with a few other students in similar situations, and while we technically chose each other, our options were limited.
The article pointed out that in such scenarios, contributions can often become uneven. For instance, teams performed Team Readiness Assessments (TRAs), and among the random teams, 36% reported that everyone contributed very well, while 64% reported that contributions were “okay, but not everyone contributed.”
My team can use this information as a guide for what to avoid. We want to ensure that no one feels overlooked and that everyone participates meaningfully. To achieve this, we have decided to distribute responsibilities evenly and involve everyone in decision-making. This includes actively checking in with each member, encouraging input from all, and fostering accountability and engagement across the team.
How we can apply this knowledge
Actively coordinating, leveraging each member’s strengths, and supporting one another both inside and outside of class activities ensures that everyone contributes and that tasks are completed effectively. This experience has reinforced the importance of teamwork, adaptability, and persistence, showing me that strong collaboration and communication are more critical than having a perfectly composed team.
Additionally, after reading “Professionalism and Business Attire: The Impact of Generational Preferences, Cultural Trends, and Workplace Expectations,” I recognized that our generation often challenges traditional norms regarding appearance and attire. While individuality is important, our team has chosen to maintain a consistent business casual look for presentations to ensure professionalism, while still incorporating personal elements that reflect our authentic selves. This approach balances professionalism with personal expression and presents a cohesive team image.
Application in academics and future work environment
In group projects and presentations, I can adapt my appearance to align with expectations and make a positive impression, while also being mindful of the diverse backgrounds and perspectives of my peers. Looking ahead to my future career, I see how this knowledge will help me navigate different work environments, communicate professionalism effectively, and collaborate respectfully with colleagues from all generations and cultures.
Conclusion
Overall, this reflection has reinforced that effective teamwork and professionalism are ongoing practices, not automatic traits. By ensuring everyone contributes, communicating openly, and presenting myself in a way that balances authenticity with professional expectations, I am learning how to collaborate successfully and make a positive impression. These lessons will guide me not only in group projects and presentations but also as I move forward into my future career, helping me navigate diverse teams and professional environments with confidence.
