Since I was a teenager, I’ve felt a calling to commit my life to law enforcement and public service, and as I’ve grown older that has only grown stronger. What I have learned through my academics in college and through my experiences in the workplace, I know that I’m absolutely called to work in law enforcement and public service. You will now read about the academic and professional experience, skills and opportunities that will pave the way for success in my life.
I am a student at Indiana University Indianapolis in O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs, IU Honors College, and the IUI Accelerated Master’s Program. At IUI O’Neill SPEA, I am completing a bachelor’s degree of Science in Criminal Justice majoring in Public Safety Management, and for the IU Accelerated Master’s Program, I am also studying for a master’s degree of Public Affairs with a concentration in Homeland Security and Emergency Management. My education at IUI O’Neill SPEA, the top public school in the United States of America for public affairs, is so important to me because of my desire to commit my career to public safety and public service, which I plan to commit to by working for an Indiana police department, and eventually for the Federal Bureau of Investigations specializing in counterterrorism operations on a joint-terrorism task force. In this field of work, every day that I clock in, I will be serving the nation and safeguarding our national security and public safety.
To ensure that I am highly qualified to succeed in my career pathway, I have developed as a student, top-of-the-line skills in open-source intelligence-based investigations, information design, mapping and analysis of geographical information systems, real-time decision making in emergencies and high-risk incidents, leading in public safety, proficiency in legal and technical writing, de-escalation in incidents, and so many more useful skills that apply to my career pathway. These skills are vital in my ability to be a public speaker, to be a leader, to communicate precisely, and to understand and effectively complete any task assigned to me to the highest ability.
Examples of my applied skills includes: an investigation with the United States Department of Homeland Security, Human Rights Violators and War Crimes Center, in which I successfully identified over 200 human rights violators who committed extra-judicial killings and other human rights violations, and then completed an internship with the center the following academic semester; and my work in the Indiana State Fairgrounds and Events Center Emergency Operation Center as the main emergency dispatcher during the 2025 Indiana State Fair, where I created emergency action plans, and dispatched in times of incidents and emergencies with multiple agencies from fire, police, EMS, and more. These are only two examples of many times that I’ve applied my skills learned from my time at Indiana University Indianapolis, and I’m committed to put them into application in my career.
I’m not just preparing myself for a career in public safety, public service, national security, and law enforcement. I’m preparing myself to lead the nation through my leadership, creation of innovative policy, operational experience in public safety and my dedication to serving the United States. If you remember anything about me, it should be my name, Elijah Nelson, because one day it’ll be my name that you hear is making a difference.
My personal statement demonstrates why I'm doing what I'm doing. Going through college and earning a bachelors and masters degree, working in many different jobs and internships that develop important skills for my career, and never giving up on my goals. In reading my personal statement, the individual will understand not only my academics, but who I am and what I am passionate for.
