I am Elijah Nelson. Everywhere I walk I carry integrity, dedication and leadership. I am committed to giving back to my community as well as my nation through public service. In my free time I enjoy playing drums and the piano, listening to music, rooting for and supporting my college, and growing my relationship with God and following Christ. My academic and professional interests are homeland security, counterterrorism, development of effective policy, and leadership in government. I have developed skills in open source investigations, geographic information systems, emergency coordination and response, and legal and technical writing. I believe that everything about me is important to my education and career, and I intend to continue developing as a student and an individual.
As a college student, my professional goals are to become an IU Cadet and qualify for the IU Police Academy, then become a part-time officer for the IU Police Department as I finish my masters degree in homeland security and emergency management. Upon graduation, I intend to advance my professional career into the Federal Bureau of Intelligence as a special agent.
IU Police Department Patch
U.S. Lady Justice & the United States Constitution
As an honors scholar at IU Indianapolis, I want to become a law enforcement officer and use my experience serving my local community of Indianapolis to become a federal agent. Both of my ambitious career goals will require use of my skills mentioned above, and commitment to excellence and public service, which I will accomplish as an honors student placing my faith in God.
My Personal Journey
In my personal journey, I have completed many goals and opportunities I would have never imagined. As I write this I'm actively interning for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Human Rights Violators and War Crimes Center.
I intend to continue my journey by working for the Indiana University Police Department as an IU Cadet Officer and continuing through the IU Police Academy, so that I can finish my degree as a part time police officer working for the IU Police Department. In more detail, as an IU Cadet Officer I'll be finishing my bachelor's degree as well as the Accelerated Masters Program, which will take place during the Fall 2026 and Spring 2027 semesters. Afterwards, I intend on attending the IU Police Academy during the Summer 2027 semester, and afterwards, I will complete the Fall 2027 and Spring 2028 semesters as a part time officer.
I believe that this journey will set me up for an extremely successful career upon graduating with my master's degree, and it will only require more determination than I've already applied in the previous semesters. However, I know, as an honors student, that I am fully capable of succeeding in my goals and in my journey. No matter what goes according to my intended path or against that path, I will pursue success.
