My name is Sana Subhan and I serve as Civic Activator Campus Liaison within the Institute of Engaged Learning at IU Indianapolis. In the pilot program I worked with a team of other activators in coordinating events, helping students connect, and working together on long term projects.
I contributed greatly to the first ever JAG Action Week, helping with promotional efforts, presentation planning, and tabling to help with outreach. I worked with the team to spread awareness about the Jag Action Grant and taught people how they can attain it as well as answered commonly asked questions about it. I also helped facilitate fun and engaging activities to make the week more exciting like Halloween bookmarks while tabling and 3D pumpkins during the workshop. At the begining of the second semester, I also presented at the annual IEL conference, providing the information to a diverse student demographic attending the academic conference.
I think that civic engagement is a significant aspect of what brings communities together. Talking to students during peer consultations about how passionate they are about volunteering and giving back to the community was really impactful for me. Often times when people have positive experiences with organizations they want to continue aiding that cause. This creates a constant cycle of growth within society. I also think it is amazing how versatile civic engagement can look. Sometimes people think outside the box and are able to innovate solutions to relevant issues. Overall, this role really showed me the value of connecting and building that civic engagement network.
Going into law I want to be educated about how I can make a difference in my community. Being a Civic Activator allowed me to give others the access and knowledge they need in order to volunteer in all their different passions. Civic Engagement is not a one size fits all. I know that I want to carry on my work in the community at a professional level once I graduate. This can mean volunteering with diferent organizations in order to provide them a legal framework to help them grow. It can also be as small as helping those with legal questions in my community that don't feel comfotable talking to attorneys or don't have the money to talk to one. Being an attorney means making the change I want to see in the world and that starts localy.
I believe that this is a time where students should come together to empower each other. With so many issues nationally and internationally I hope that I can help students learn about their rights and the power of their voices. I am majoring in Law in Liberal Arts BA/JD program and minoring in Philosophy intending to graduate in spring 2028 and attend law school in fall 2027. I believe that the skills and connections that I have gained as a Civic Activator will stay with me throughout my career.
