I am ultimately preparing myself for graduate work and a career in genetic counseling . So far, my college experience has taught me many important lab skills and useful knowledge relevant to my career path. Many times in my past work experience as a restaurant hostess, I would have to deal with unhappy customers. Whether it was due to a long wait time, a misunderstanding or something completely out of the restaurant's control, I always remained kind and courteous and did whatever I could to help. One particular instance of conflict resolution was when a customer became incredibly upset because there was not any seating available in the area they preferred. Because they did not have a reservation, it was particularly difficult to prioritize their needs. However, I was able to use problem solving and my interpersonal skills to work out a solution. I recalled that I had sat a group in the desired area about two hours before. I walked over and saw that the group was no longer eating, just chatting amongst each other. I walked over to the table and asked how their meal was. After speaking with the group for a moment, I glanced outside and saw we had open seating. I suggested that they have dessert on the patio since it was such a beautiful day. When they agreed that that was a great idea, they quickly moved away from their table. I took the initiative to clean the table myself and then quickly went back to the upset customers. I told them we were able to clear off a table for them just in time, and they were very pleased with my efforts to give them the experience they hoped for.
