Aside from my internship work, I have worked as a hostess at two different restaurants. I first hosted at a sushi restaurant called Chiba. This was a smaller locally owned restaurant. My duties as a hostess often extended into helping bus tables and assist servers on top of coordinating reservations and seating guests. This particular hosting experience taught me the importance of initiative. Often times the servers would get rushed all at once, so I would step in to help them run food and bus. By taking the initiative to do tasks outside of my job expectations, my co-workers and I were able to give our customers the best experience possible. This job helped shape my interpersonal skills from customer interaction, which I greatly enjoyed. I also loved the fast pace of the restaurant that helped teach me to think and act on my feet.
This past summer I worked as hostess at a fine-dining restaurant called Provision. This hosting job was unlike my previous job as I worked with another host each shift. This was a new challenge because I was used to working on my own. However, I found that working with another host actually made things run much more smoothly. By dividing up our tasks, we were able to work much more efficiently. We were also able to problem solve together when dealing with things such as specific customer requests. I was able to utilize my planning skills to be organized and detail oriented to meet the fine-dining expectations of the customers.
Throughout my high school and college career, I have tried to keep myself involved in volunteer work. Majority of my volunteering has been done at a local church and catholic grade school, Our Lady of Grace. I have participated in many different types of volunteer work ranging from helping teachers set up for class to serving sponsored church dinners. Throughout the various types of work I have participated in, I have always felt a sense of community while working along side parishioners and faculty members. The idea of coming together to help the church and its members has always been motivating to continue in this work. The gratifying experience of working with others to do good for the community is something that you can't get from anything else.
