I originally chose to major in biology because I was interested in research and lab work. However, as I began my classes, one topic really seemed to grasp my attention in lecture: genetics. This interest soon developed into something I felt passionate about. I knew I wanted to help people with my career, and I knew I loved genetics. Exploring within my major allowed me to discover my dream job of genetic counseling. My interest in biology led me to finding and pursuing a career path I knew nothing about coming into college.
Specialization in: Genetics
Attending Graduate School for: Genetic Counseling
A good team member is someone who is willing to make sacrifices for the greater good of his or her collaborative work and their team. A team member should also encourage coworkers and always work together to create the best work possible. I am very willing to listen and provide constructive criticism to the members of my team. I also always work to set aside my personal needs to focus on the group's goal first. I want to constantly grow in my communication skills as I continue to work with a team. I also want to work on broadening my worldview to open my ideas to more inclusive and creative approaches to problem solving.
After getting to experience a little bit of the health science world through this internship, I have noticed how much passion and dedication these professionals have towards their work. Dr. Comer is a very hardworking and ambitious woman with so many different projects going on at once. She works both in the health science department with her research and also as a professor here at IUPUI. As I entered her office for the very first meeting, I noticed her white board organized with dates of all her projects' deadlines. Her notes covered the entire wall. This was my first indication that she was a very busy woman. As the internship has gone on, I have only grown to admire her more as I have noticed she balances her hectic work schedule with a wonderful family life. She has a two-year old daughter and has just had her second! I have had the pleasure of getting to meet her daughter Millie, and it is apparent that she is so loved. I truly aspire to be able to have the dedication that Dr. Comer has for her work in my own career, and I hope to someday balance my professional life with my family life as elegantly as she does.
I have truly grown as a research assistant from the beginning of the LHSI program to now, and I look forward to possibly continuing on with this role over the summer through UROP. At the beginning of my internship, I barely knew anything about stroke or palliative care. I had no clue how to conduct a retrospective patient chart review study. Every meeting we had, it sounded like all the other research assistants were speaking jibberish as they mentioned things like patient comorbidities, PEG tubes, and other various medical jargon. Now, I find myself being able to follow along with the group conversations and ask meaningful questions. I've learned so much about stroke and end of life care that I was not aware of before. I've learned to communicate effectively with a team and collaborate. I still have room to grow in being more proactive with issues that may arise. In the future, I should work to contact my supervisors more promptly when I sense a potential issue in the future rather than waiting for it to be a current issue. Otherwise, I feel that I have learned a lot about being a professional in the STEM world, and I have learned many valuable lessons that I will carry on with me to all of my future internships and careers.
