A JOURNEY THAT CHANGES STUDENTS' LIVES

An experience capable of profoundly transforming not only the way one sees the world, but also oneself. This is the truest meaning of the Erasmus+ project, the European Union program that promotes cultural mobility among high school students.

Increasingly popular among teenagers as well, Erasmus+ represents a unique opportunity for personal and social growth, bringing participants into contact with cultures, habits, and environments completely different from their own. An opportunity that becomes a true educational journey, far beyond the classroom.

This is what emerges from the experience of a group of 20 Italian students (accompanied by three teachers) from the Liceo Simone Weil in Treviglio, who left on February 1 from Milan Linate Airport and returned on February 7 with much more than they started with. A deep inner change that some might call, quoting Petrarch, a “mutatio animi,” but which in its simplicity can simply be called life.

During their stay, the students had the chance to build stronger bonds among themselves and form new friendships with Dutch students, who stood out for their hospitality, willingness to help, and spirit of sharing. Thanks to their support, the Italian participants were able to immerse themselves in the local culture, understanding customs and traditions.

There was no shortage of study moments: the project included activities related to environmental sustainability, such as creative work, presentations, and in-depth explorations of current issues. These were accompanied by visits to various cities and cutting-edge facilities, where students were able to observe innovative solutions for material recycling and renewable energy production.

Another key aspect of the experience was the improvement of English language skills, used daily as a means of communication. Constant practice allowed participants to enhance their linguistic abilities in a natural and effective way.

Erasmus+ thus proves to be not only a physical journey, but also an inner one, leading to the discovery of one’s identity and abilities. An opportunity that, according to those who have experienced it, is worth taking without hesitation.

An experience that leaves its mark and shows how, today more than ever, traveling means growing.
