A catalyst for this project was the donation in 2019 of a set of materials documenting the activities of the Pocatello-Blackfoot Chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL). Project members worked with the director of the ISU Library Special Collections to inventory and organize the collection and develop a detailed finding aid for future researchers. Although this is just one source of information on the rich history of this community, it is an essential and valuable record of their activities.

The Japanese American Citizens League (JACL) Collection consists of the records of the Pocatello-Blackfoot chapters of the JACL, the Tri-Cities, the Intermountain District Council, the National JACL, and local Japanese American families during the period 1938 through 2013. The collections includes JACL meeting minutes, newsletters, conference publications, correspondence, scrapbooks, and photograph albums. The materials were donated to the ISU Oboler Library Special Collections in 2019 by JACL members. The link above provides a detailed inventory.

Interviews with nearly 40 community members, mostly Nisei, were conducted between 1996 and 2004. Recordings of all of these are part of the JACL Collection. A selected set are available as part of the ISU Library Online Collections. Click the link to listen in or read the transcripts!
