The Hague International Model United Nations is the largest high school MUN conference in the world, and this year it is online. The MUN club at IST has been participating in MUN conferences started by THIMUN Foundation since the 1980s. For information about specific years including IST delegate reflections, look at the buttons to the side of the page. IST has also sent ICJ participants and Student Officers to THIMUN multiple times, including holding President positions in both the Historic Security Council and the Security Council.
Monday 25th of January (end of Day 1):
Day one started off bleak. Technical issues and the abundance of social awkwardness were affecting morale. In lobbying there was more talk and discussion which eased things out. The gossip page was also moderately entertaining and kept things going. I hope things are a lot more settled and interesting on day 2. In my committee, people didn’t get the chance to socialize or really get to know each other, which made it slightly more challenging to work on resolutions. I intend to actively take charge in order to make the conference fruitful and elegant.

Tuesday 26th of January (end of Day 2):
Finally got to debate today! The formatting was a bit weird cause some people were merging while others debated and they had a lot of issues with enemy countries making resolutions together but it was fun none the less. I got to do some funny analogies and speeches on resolutions. I am super proud of my co delegate Dhruv because he came up with amazing points when reading the resolutions even though it's his first MUN conference. Overall I think day two of THIMUN was a pretty good day - though being in person last year was better :)
Delegate of Chile, HRC
Tuesday 26th of January (end of Day 2):
Since we actually debated today I had to chair which made me so so nervous at first even though I’ve done it so many times before. I was shaking as I messaged my deputies. but as I chaired I got calmer and messed up less. We stayed and talked w our delegates at the ends and they are all already poking fun at me but that means they’re comfortable in the committee which makes me less anxious. We’re debating the full reso tomorrow and I’m excited about that and to finally get to my topic. feeling quite a bit less stressed and more excited for the days to come :)
President, The Security Council
Monday 25th of January (end of Day 1):
I think today was a really good day. I think the conference started off on the right foot and that all delegated were ready to begin lobbying and merging in a positive and respectful manner. One of the things I realized is it really allows you to test yourself at another level. This is because speaking Infront of approximately 200 people in a commission is quiet difficult and yet all of us managed to do it. THIMUN delegates are very serious and love interacting with other delegates. So please don't hesitate to socialize but we should work at the same time. All in all lobbying and merging was quite good today and it was a good experience. I can't wait to see what tomorrow holds for us.
Delegation of Chile, DISC
Monday 25th of January (end of Day 1):
Today was the first day of online THIMUN. To begin with, it was kind of boring and not very interactive as it was a lot of listening and the chairs going over procedures and how everything is going to work as it is virtual this year. After that, we had to give our policy statement speeches, which I had prepared and gave when Finland was called upon. After that, the chairs assigned us into breakout rooms and it was kind of disappointing that we were assigned into a topic that I personally hadn't gone much deeper into, I had more research and a better understanding of the other two topics. Although, as we started to get familiar with the other delegates in my commission, I began to further understand the topic and we all collaborated to create a resolution with possible solutions for the topic.

Thursday 28th of January (end of Day 4):
I'm happy that today I got more active. I spoke more than I did in the previous days. I made mistakes time and again but the important thing is that I learn from them and improve so that I can be better in the future. I'm also happy that I got to make friends with other delegates when we were placed in breakout rooms, hearing from them and exchanging experiences was wonderful. I look forward for tomorrow's session.
Delegate of Finland, SDC
Monday 25th of January (end of Day 1):
Today was not as bad as I was dreading (except the long and tiring policy statements) given it was my first ever THIMUN session and I felt a bit inexperienced which makes sense cause it was my first conference. SDC was great, though I wish I had talked and contributed more. My break out team was amazing, everyone was actively participating towards making the final resolution. We didn't get to finish today but we are hoping to have it completed by tomorrow before everyone presents theirs. I'm thankful that the leaders were there to support us throughout the session. For tomorrow's session, I plan on being more active in voicing out my ideas.
