Center Overview (TWISC@NSYSU)
§ Abstract §
Fifth-generation mobile communication (5G) technologies and their evolution toward Beyond 5G (B5G) provide ultra-high bandwidth and ultra-low latency. They also introduce new communication methods, computing models, and network architectures for applications involving the Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI), thereby enabling a broader range of innovative applications. However, as intelligent 5G/B5G systems continue to develop, the rapid growth in intelligent end devices and edge-computing devices, together with the integration of heterogeneous networks through 5G/B5G, is diversifying data-sharing methods and application-driven computing requirements. These developments also create new cybersecurity threats and protection needs. Accordingly, the Center conducts research on secure intelligent communication and computing technologies for next-generation 5G/B5G networks and develops prototype systems.
§ Core Focus §
The Taiwan Information Security Center at National Sun Yat-sen University (TWISC@NSYSU) was established in July 2018. The Center is directed by Distinguished Professor Chun-I Fan. Faculty members and graduate students participating in the Center’s research come from universities across northern, central, and southern Taiwan, including National Pingtung University, National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology, Kaohsiung Medical University, I-Shou University, National Chung Cheng University, National Chiayi University, National Chengchi University, National Taiwan Normal University, National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, and Taiwan Police College. The Center also employs postdoctoral researchers and full-time research assistants to support research and development, technology promotion, industry–academia collaboration, and other Center activities.
The Center focuses on the research and development of next-generation secure intelligent communication and computing technologies. As smart cities continue to evolve, the importance of network communications is undeniable. Communication systems connect both individual users and critical national infrastructure; security is therefore essential, ranging from the protection of personal data to the confidentiality of national secrets.
With reference to internationally recognized communication standards and organizations, including GSMA, 3GPP, and ITU-R, the Center conducts research and development on security mechanisms for current 5G systems and incorporates B5G security research in line with international trends. Within next-generation secure communication systems, the Center investigates system security, hardware security, data security, and network security.
The Center’s research is organized into two major areas: Intelligent Computation Security and Intelligent Communication Security.
In Intelligent Computation Security, current research focuses on mobile edge computing security, attribute-based encryption for secure cloud-computing systems, functional encryption such as predicate encryption, and hardware security.
In Intelligent Communication Security, current research focuses on real-time handover mechanisms for ultra-dense networks, security protection for core network virtualization, and the implementation, security threat analysis, and defense of attacks against communication infrastructure, including base stations.
