Attendance is one of the best ways of predicting student success. As a result, as a student misses a significant number of classes, we will start a dialogue with the student, parents and school leaders. The question of whether these absences are excused or not is less of an issue than whether or not the student is in class.
Here is a guide to how we monitor attendance in the MYP and Diplomas Divisions.
Each MYP unit has at least one major assessment, which will be announced on ManageBac at the beginning of the unit. This allows students to plan their time effectively.
In the MYP teachers plan carefully the timing of formative and summative assessment to ensure balance throughout the year. Where possible, teachers set deadlines for these tasks in collaboration with students giving a consideration to the assessment schedule and workload in other subjects. It is an expectation that students meet their deadlines in the MYP. If they are experiencing difficulty to do so, they must contact their teacher as soon as possible so that a possible extension can be discussed. Across the 5 years of the MYP, students receive age-appropriate support and guidance with their study skills and work management. Overall, MYP students are expected to develop such work habits that they are prepared for the rigour of later assessments in Grade 11-12.
