To be completely successful as a DP student, and to be properly prepared for success beyond ISH, students are encouraged to be active learners. In other words, the action you take as a student will be the most important factor in your learning, not the action taken by your teachers. You have the responsibility to make sure you get everything you can out of your education. Active learning has two aspects. The first is being engaged in activities that demand higher level thinking skills and being aware of the process of learning, not just the product. Your teachers will set assessments that will help you do that. The second aspect of active learning is the set of behaviours that active learners display. These include the following:
participating in class
taking notes
understanding the course curriculum
finding gaps in your own understanding and finding ways to fill those gaps
independent reading and extra practice
innovative study habits
collaborative study
asking for clarification and help
Students who are able to perform at their full potential consistently demonstrate many of these behaviours.
Academic concern
Our aim in the Upper School is to ensure that all our students achieve their full potential. A student will be the subject of Academic Concern if they receive a 1 or 2 in any course, or for IB Diploma students, if the total grade points add up to a sum less than 26 (with adjustments for ungraded courses). This designation means that their progress will be closely monitored over the next semester and support systems will be put in place. This includes the following:
Communication with parents
A close monitoring of attendance and assessment feedback on ManageBac
More regular check-ins with teachers about engagement and academic progress
An exploration of the High School Diploma as an option
Required attendance during Flex block for extra support
IB students who receive a 1 or 2 in any course will become High School students to ensure that graduation requirements are met.
Completing work
In the DP, students need to keep up with the assessments required. Here are the principles we follow as a DP program.
Students are responsible for the work they have missed. They need to check ManageBac and contact the teacher as needed to keep up.
There is an expectation that all deadlines should be met. Students needing extensions must have that need assessed by the teacher and coordinator as required. If a student is struggling to meet the deadlines, they will need to recieve support from the counselor or coordinator to help them get on track.
If a student misses an exam or another fixed deadline because of an absence, the expectation is that the assessment will be made up as early as possible. That is usually during the Flex period on the Friday of the same week. If more flexibility is required, the student needs to communicate with the teacher.
Retests or resubmissions will not be provided on demand.

Turning 18
When a student turns 18, based on Finnish law, they own and control the information about their education. The school needs the student's permission to share information about the student's grades, attendance or behaviour with other adults, including parents. A student needs to inform the Division Director if they wish their information to be shared.
