As students enter the Diploma Programme (grades 11-12), they can choose whether to pursue the IB Diploma or the High School Diploma. In some cases, students will be accepted to the High School Diploma only, both from other schools and from the ISH MYP programme. This is to make sure that students pursuing the IB Diploma have the skills necessary to be successful. These are some factors from previous years that will influence the acceptance decision:
attendance
ability to be a responsible and respectful member of a community
academic achievement
experience with the MYP personal project
English ability
level of learning support and/or curriculum modification.
Students who will only be here for the last year of high school cannot do the IB Diploma (unless they have completed the first year of the IB DP successfully at another school). They would take courses to earn credits for the High School Diploma; the courses needed would depend on the student's transcripts from previous schools and the student's future goals.
Because all of our courses are two-year courses, there are challenges to finding classes that will support the student's learning. We have several alternatives:
There are some classes that are easier to enter in grade 12 as the units are more self-contained. These include English, History, ITGS, Visual Arts and Film.
Most of the other classes we offer in the DP would be accessible to students with some experience in the subject area.
Sometimes grade 12 students enrol in grade 11 classes to access the first year of the two-year course.
For high school diploma students, we have a high level of flexibility in what we can give credit for. This includes online classes from other institutions.
We would discuss these options whenever students are ready to make decisions about their courses.
If a student wishes to earn the IB Diploma, they would enter grade 11 and and complete the IB Diploma in two years.
