At ISH, parents and guardians play a vital role in fostering a positive and supportive school community. As partners in your child's education, you help create the environment where all students can thrive academically, socially, and personally.
Our diverse community represents over 70 nationalities, bringing together families from around the world who share a common commitment to excellence in international education. This rich cultural tapestry is one of our greatest strengths, and it requires all of us to work together with intention, respect, and care.
These guidelines are designed to help you engage with the school in ways that support your child's success while contributing to a respectful, safe, and inclusive environment for everyone. They are rooted in our three core values—Caring, Courageous, and Growth Mindset—which guide every aspect of life at ISH.
This page is organized into two main sections:
Our Core Values in Action: Learn how ISH's three core values translate into specific expectations and behaviors for parents and guardians in our community.
Practical Responsibilities: Understand the day-to-day expectations that help our school run smoothly and support every child's success.
By embracing these guidelines, you become an active partner in creating the kind of school community where every child feels valued, supported, and inspired to reach their full potential.
Thank you for being part of the ISH family!
Our three core values - Caring, Courageous, and Growth Mindset - shape every aspect of our community. As parents and guardians, you play a crucial role in bringing these values to life both at home and in your interactions with our school community.
What this means: In our diverse community of 70+ nationalities, caring means actively creating space where every family feels valued, respected, and heard. Treat all students with respect—exclusion or vilification will not be tolerated.
How parents can demonstrate caring:
Greet all children warmly, not just your own child's friends
Welcome new families and show interest in different cultural backgrounds
Address concerns directly with school staff rather than gossiping
Include children who might be standing alone during school events
Model kindness and patience in all interactions with students, staff, and families
If conflicts arise:
Approach disagreements with empathy and an open mind
Focus on solutions that work for the whole community
Seek to understand different perspectives before responding
In practice: When you see a parent who seems hesitant to join conversations, introduce yourself. When planning class activities, consider different cultural celebrations and dietary needs.
Your caring actions create a safe environment for all children to thrive and model the respect we want students to show each other.
What this means: Being courageous means addressing concerns directly while maintaining respect for others and the learning environment.
How parents can demonstrate courage:
Communicate openly with teachers about your child's needs
Ask questions when you don't understand school policies or decisions
Advocate for your child while considering the broader classroom community
Address conflicts directly with the people involved rather than through gossip
Stand up for inclusive practices when you witness exclusion
When advocating for your child:
Focus on specific concerns with concrete examples
Listen to the teacher's or school's perspective before responding
Work collaboratively to find solutions that benefit your child and the class
Follow proper channels (teacher first, then principal if needed - read more here)
In practice: If you have concerns about your child's learning, schedule a meeting with the teacher rather than discussing it with other parents. If you witness behavior that goes against our values, address it respectfully and directly.
Your courageous communication helps create a school environment where problems are solved constructively and every child's needs are heard.
What this means: Modeling a growth mindset means showing your children that learning is ongoing, mistakes are valuable, and effort leads to improvement.
How parents can demonstrate growth mindset:
Focus on effort and process rather than just outcomes
Share your own learning experiences and challenges
Encourage resilience when your child faces difficulties
Celebrate progress and improvement, not just achievements
Show curiosity and ask questions alongside your child
In practice: When your child struggles with homework, ask "What strategies could we try?" instead of "Why is this so hard?" When they face social challenges, help them brainstorm solutions rather than solving the problem for them.
Your growth mindset approach helps children develop resilience, curiosity, and a lifelong love of learning.
Make sure your child attends school regularly and on time. If they need to be absent, let us know through the school system (Toddle or Managebac). Please also inform us if your child needs to leave early. Regular attendance is key to their success! Excessive absences may result in intervention by the municipality.
To help keep everyone healthy, please keep your child at home if they’re feeling unwell. If they become sick at school, be prepared to pick them up. Following health guidelines keeps all students safe.
Help your child come to school ready for the day by ensuring they are well-nourished, rested, clean, and dressed in appropriate clothing. Being prepared helps them focus and make the most of their school day.
Make sure your child has the time and space they need to finish their homework and school tasks. Encouraging good study habits helps them stay on track.
Stay connected by attending parent events, reading newsletters, and regularly checking the school portals. Engaging with school communications helps you stay aware of your child’s development and school activities.
Encourage your child to follow school rules and agreements. Supporting the school’s policies helps create a positive and respectful learning environment for everyone.
Support the school community by contributing where you can—whether it’s helping with classroom activities, volunteering as a class parent, or assisting with school events. Your involvement strengthens the school community and provides valuable support to teachers and students.
Make sure your child doesn’t bring unapproved items to school and follows school safety guidelines. Contributing to a safe school environment helps everyone feel secure.
Model responsible online behaviour and encourage your child to make thoughtful, respectful choices in their online interactions. Maintaining a positive online presence is key to creating a healthy digital environment for all students.
As a parent, you have the primary responsibility for the upbringing, protection and development of your child. Familiarise yourself with Danish Child Protection laws and ISH’s Safeguarding Policy. Understanding these laws helps you support your child’s well-being and ensures that you are aware of how the school protects all students.
