MSHSL Large/Small Group Adjudication Criteria:
All Bands at the High School level will participate in the Region 4AA Large Group Contest and all students are encouraged but not required to perform in the Region 4AA Solo/Ensemble Contest. Please complete your Fine Arts Eligibility through the district online payment system: https://www.isd624.org/departments/technology/online-payment
There is no fee for participation but there are several release form required.
M.S.H.S.L. stands for Minnesota State High School League
Large and small ensembles will be judged and given scores in the areas of:
Tone Quality: clarity, consistency, control, focus, warmth;
Intonation: accuracy to printed pitches, consistency of pitch, with accompaniment/ensemble;
Rhythm: accuracy of note and rest values, correctness of meters, duration, pulse, steadiness;
Balance, Blend: accompaniment, awareness of ensemble, likeness of qualities, matching of registers; Technique (facility/accuracy): attacks, releases, control of ranges, mechanical skill; Interpretation/Musicianship: dynamics, emotional involvement, artistry, phrasing, style, tempo;
Articulation – Winds and Execution – Percussion
Other Performance Factors: appropriate appearance, choice of literature, facial expression (vocal), general conduct, mannerisms, poise, posture
Scores in each category are:
5 -A superior performance
4 -An excellent performance
3 -A good performance
2 -A fair performance
1 -A poor performance
Total overall scores are:
35-40 POINTS = CERTIFICATE AND AWARD (Superior Rating)
28-34 POINTS = CERTIFICATE (Excellent Rating)
22-27 POINTS = (Good Rating)
21 or below = (Fair Rating)
