WBLAHS Musical Theatre is thrilled to participate in the Hennepin Theatre Trust's Spotlight Education Program. Spotlight is a program for Minnesota high schools that supplies masterclasses for students, evaluations and feedback for performances, and a showcase opportunity for qualifying productions where students have the chance to perform at the Orpheum Theatre in Downtown Minneapolis.
Through the Production Assessment process, Spotlight sends trained theatre professionals and educators to watch and assess participating school’s musical theatre productions. The Production Assessment is an educational tool to encourage, inspire and enhance Spotlight school’s musical theatre programs and strengthen the skills of student artists — onstage and offstage. Feedback and awards are given to any student in cast, crew, tech, and costume arts.
With a high enough honors, schools are invited to participate in the Spotlight Showcase performance in early summer. Spotlight Showcase is a professionally-produced, two-night event highlighting the hard work and talent of the students, teachers, families and community members that are part of the vibrant high school musical theater community in Minnesota. Both nights of Showcase feature a variety of performances, including technical students and orchestra. The individuals and schools that are honored through the Production Assessment evaluation process will be invited to participate at Spotlight Showcase which takes place in early June.
Masterclasses are open to any student participating in the WBLAHS musical, and are offered throughout the entire school year. These classes are an incredible opportunity for students to experience the next step in theatre, where they will learn new skills from both local and touring theater professionals. There are opportunities for actors, musicians, and tech/crew students, and topics include: audition technique, singing technique, movement, orchestra, technical theater, dance and more.
