Hello! My name is Taylor Storbeck and I am a certified ESL teacher serving grades Pre K-12 for Bemidji Area Schools. Here you will find resources that will aid you in serving the English Learners we are fortunate to have learning with us in our schools! If you have any questions or would like to set up a meeting, please don't hesitate to reach out via email at taylor_storbeck@isd31.net.
Who do we serve?
All students enrolled in public school in the state of MN fill out a MN Language Survey upon enrollment. When another language is indicated, as either the native/first language OR their current home language, the student is referred to the ESL teacher for screening to determine eligibility for ESL services.
***It is important to note, families often indicate "only English" for a variety of reasons. Please never hesitate to reach out to ask me about a student. It is very possible I have never been made aware of them and would be happy to contact the family to verify language background information and conduct a screener if needed.
The chart to the left indicates the identification criteria for ESL students in Minnesota. If another language is indicated on the MN Language Survey or a referral is made by a teacher, a screening assessment will be administered.
Students take an annual assessment, ACCESS for ELLs, to determine continuing eligibility for each school year.
Modifications and Accommodations differ depending on the language level of your ESL student. I will always do my best to make sure you know what levels you have in your classes as well as what is appropriate to expect from them. Please reach out if you haven't heard from me! Below are some helpful resources.
WIDA is a Wisconsin based company that develops standards, tools, and assessments to support multilingual learners and the educators who teach them. Minnesota has adopted their English Language Development standards, can-do statements, and annual ACCESS for ELLs assessment.
