RTI What is it?
RTI is a regular education initiative. It is meant for all students. RTI is not special education. For Speech we typically work with your students for 8-16 weeks for 7-10 minutes during their day. Since this is a supplement to your students learning it is not necessarily done everyday with the SLP/SLPA, it may sometimes facilitated by the classroom teacher/para or we may send homework home for the student to work on at home with an adult. Your student does not miss any major class times such as Math/reading/Specials, etc. Click the link below to understand more about RTI.
What are the steps towards RTI?
1: Screening Referral Form for Teachers
Families: This is the first step towards receiving RTI Speech services for your student. If your students teacher has concerns they are seeing in the classroom they will fill out this form and connect with you. Please take this time to voice any speech concerns you may have at home. This helps determine the need to screen your student. Let your teachers know that you agree to have your student screened through verbal communication, a written note or email.
Teachers please fill this out before you ask for a speech/ language Screening and send it to the SLP/SLPA. This allows us to screen your students for possible RTI services.
2: Screening.
Once the SLP/A receives permission from you to do a screening through the screening referral, the SLP/A will do an age appropriate screening of your students Articulation and Language abilities. This screening will take about 10-15 minutes to complete. After a screening is done the SLPA will discuss the results with the SLP supervisor and they will determine the next steps for your student.
If your student passes the screening but you still have concerns. The SLP/A can decide to do one of two things: 1) they can monitor the students progress bi-monthly by checking in with the classroom staff, talking with the student or 2) they can provide you with additional resources that can be used at home.
(find additional resources on the Articulation and Language Pages)
If your student fails the screening. Depending on your students age the SLP/A may decide to do a re-screen after 8 weeks with no intervention, giving the student time to grow. If after your second screening the student still fails, you will receive a letter asking for permission to do RTI. RTI can be provided for a minimum of 8 weeks and up to 16 weeks of services before Evaluation is considered. RTI services can continue passed 16 weeks if the student is in the process of being Evaluated for services until the initial IEP meeting has happened.
How can you help at home?
Whether or not your student passes the screening you can always help your student at home by reading stories together, doing a "sound search" by finding words with your students sounds or by playing fun games that include your targeted concerns. If your student is receiving RTI services at the school you may start seeing homework sheets after your child has proven to be 90% accurate with their skills with the SLPA/SLP, this is called carryover homework. Carryover, helps your student to start using their speech and language targets in different settings on their own. With your help we can really make a difference for your students learning and communication skills. Thank you for all you do!
