Class Description

This 40-hour certification class will prepare you to work immediately as an entry-level interpreter in schools, healthcare clinics, and the community. The average wage for interpreters in the Twin Cities metro is $28 - 34 /hr!

  • Topics: ethics and conduct, interpreter skills, mediation, cultural competency, community services, standards of practice, and vocabulary skill-building.

  • Learn about interpreter positions at Bloomington Public Schools!

  • At the end of class: written exam (75% passing) and practice interview.

  • Expect 3 - 4 hours of independent reading homework each week

Minimum Class Requirements

  • Class Group 5 . Must have a high school diploma (foreign ok) or be in Adult Diploma or GED program

  • Documentation to work in the U.S.

  • Fluent in a second language

  • Recommended to take Med Term class first, if possible

  • Regular Reading test (pre and post)

Valid recognition, preferred by healthcare providers, increased demand, lifelong advancement opportunities

  • An OPI score of Advanced High is good enough for medical interpreting.
