What is Energy Assistance?

Energy Assistance Program (EAP) facts

    • Renters & homeowners are eligible.

    • Assets such as the home are not considered in determining eligibility.

    • Grants range from $300 to $1,600, based on household size, income, and fuel cost.

    • The average grant is about $550.

    • In addition to the initial grant, additional Crisis funds are available to:

    • Help pay a past due bill or get an emergency fuel delivery.

    • Help homeowners get their broken furnace repaired or replaced.


Recent program changes to help more people

  • Doubled Crisis funds to $1,200 (from $600) per household.

  • Extended the deadline to apply to September 1, 2021. And applications for next year’s season (2021-2022) open on September 2, so there is no break in the ability to apply.

  • Raised the income limit from 50 percent to 60 percent of the state’s median income, which makes about 100,000 more Minnesota households eligible.
