Middle school is where students transform from being beginning musicians into confident performers. Through consistent instruction, meaningful performances, and a supportive orchestra community, students develop the skills, independence, and leadership that prepare them for success in high school and beyond.

Middle school orchestra classes meet every other day for 53 minutes

When in middle school orchestra, students recieve lessons each quarter in indiviual and small group formats.
Performances

All orchestras participate in 3 performances a year as a culmination of the skills we have learned in class.
5th grade students develop their skills, learn the basics, and have fun making music with their peers.

6th, 7th and 8th grade students also meet every other day for their orchestra class and receive small group lessons each quarter. Each grade works on progressively difficult skills and builds on previous knowledge from the year before. Students are eligible to participate in the MNSOTA Middle Level All State Orchestra through auditions that occur in October.

Concert Performances
All students participate in 3 performances a year to showcase their learning from class. Students are expected to attend these performances as it is an important part of our learning. Please reference the performance calendar and ensure these performances are in your calendar.

What if my child misses a concert?
We understand that sometimes evening concerts can be difficult to attend, but we hope families make every efforts to attend them as they are an important part of our learning experiences. It is very difficult to make up an experience like a concert performance, however, in an effort to accomodate such situation, students will generally be asked to video record themselves performing our concert music for credit.
What if their instrument needs repair?
Instruments require maintenance often. Thankfully, we work with great music stores that are always willing to help. If you contact your music store you will be able to set up a way for them to pick up your instrument and get it repaired in their store.
What if they forget their instrument?
We have extra instruments at school in case a student happens to forget their instrument. It should not be done intentionally and frequently but only in case of emergencies.
What if my child needs a larger sized instrument?
If you are unsure if your child needs a larger size, check out this sizing chart from our friends at All Strings Attached.
If you find you are in need of a larger instrument, reach out to your music store and they will have a larger size delivered for their next trip to the school.
