At the High School, Concertino Orchestra meets daily (with choir students attending on alternating days), while Chamber Orchestra offers an auditioned ensemble experience for students seeking an additional challenge. Students are eligible to pursue even more playing opportunities such as performing in musicals, learning a solo for Solo and Ensemble, auditioning for honors ensembles such as the Minnesota All-State Orchestra, participate in our international performance tour held every three years, and also participate in Hastings local, River Valley Community Orchestra.

Concert Performances
High school students participate in 4 curricular concerts a year and have options for alternative performance opportunities through honors orchestra, solo and ensemble, and chamber performances. Students are expected to attend the curricular performances as part of their grade. Please reference the performance calendar and ensure these performances are in your calendar. Please note that there is a ticket price at our concerts of $5

High schoolers are expected to look professional at each of our performances wearing concert black to create a unified and sleek look with their classmates. Additional accessories such as necklaces and ties are acceptable as long as it keeps to the dress code.

FAQs
What if my child misses a concert?
We understand that sometimes evening concerts can be difficult to attend, but we hope families make every efforts to attend them as they are an important part of our learning experiences. It is very difficult to make up an experience like a concert performance, however, in an effort to accomodate such situation, students will generally be asked to video record themselves performing our concert music for credit.
What if their instrument needs repair?
Instruments require maintenance often. Thankfully, we work with great music stores that are always willing to help. If you contact your music store you will be able to set up a way for them to pick up your instrument and get it repaired in their store.
What if they forget their instrument?
We have extra instruments at school in case a student happens to forget their instrument. It should not be done intentionally and frequently but only in case of emergencies.
When should we purchase an instrument?
If your child is playing on a full sized instrument, or has stopped growing, it is recommended to purchase an instrument.
If your child is really interested in succeeding in high school orchestra, possibly looking for an instrument that is a little higher quality can really go a long way.

A Program That Grows With Students
From their very first notes in fifth grade to their final concert as seniors, students in the Hastings Orchestra Program experience a thoughtfully sequenced curriculum designed to develop confident musicians, compassionate leaders, and lifelong advocates for music. High school represents the culmination of that journey, providing students with opportunities to refine their musicianship, mentor younger performers, and leave a lasting impact on the program.
