Criterion A: Investigation
Research different accessory designs, materials and fashion design principles.
Investigate the capabilities and limitations of 3D printing technology
Identify the user needs and preferences for the jewellery piece
3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, is a technology that allows for the creation of complex shapes and geometries by building up layers of material. The capabilities of 3D printing include the ability to produce complex and customizable parts, rapid prototyping, and the creation of end-use products.
However, there are also limitations to 3D printing. One limitation is the size of the parts that can be printed, as many 3D printers have a limited build volume. Additionally, the materials that can be used in 3D printing are currently limited, although this is an area of active research and development. The cost of 3D printing can also be relatively high, especially for large or complex parts.
Another limitation is the surface finish and mechanical properties of the printed parts, which are usually not as good as those of traditionally manufactured parts.
Finally, 3D printing is not suitable for mass production, as it is more time-consuming and less efficient than traditional manufacturing methods such as injection molding.
