Singley Academy Red Ribbon Week and Fentanyl Education
Drug Awareness/Fentanyl (9-12) Lesson Plan
As part of the Red Ribbon Week experience, the Singley Counseling Team hosted the Dallas Poison Control Center to speak to all grade levels about the dangers of prescription medications including fentanyl. Through the week, the team was present at all lunches talking to students about drugs, alcohol, and healthy choices. Students were encouraged to sign the pledge to be drug free. Over 800 students made the pledge and were entered into a raffle each day. The team hand delivered awesome snacks and goodies to the winning students at the end of each day. In an effort to keep healthy decision making and drug awareness in the forefront of our students' minds, the counseling team presented to individual classes on the dangers of fentanyl. The team shared a powerful documentary , "Dead on Arrival" and facilitated a Q&A with the students throughout the presentation.
Singley Academy Career Exploration Fair
Based on data from our beginning of the year needs assessment, we found that students expressed that they needed more knowledge and exposure regarding college and career readiness, In response counselors sponsored a Career Exploration Fair in May 2023. The career fair included local government organizations such as Irving PD and Irving Fire Department. There were also representatives from the Dallas College, military, and local businesses. These local businesses offered students an opportunity to explore careers and some businesses offered an opportunity to gain employment over the summer. We use yearly needs assessment data as a guide to prepare data driven lessons and activities.
