In 2024, Indian River Central School District received 400 Bleed Control Kits as part of a disaster preparedness initiative. These kits have since been placed throughout the district to provide access to bleeding control tools in the event of an extreme emergency. These kits include:
a military-grade tourniquet
compression gauze
trauma shears
a thermal blanket
latex-free gloves

It is our sincere hope that the contents of these boxes never see the light of day, but we are grateful to be prepared to help our students, faculty and staff whenever called upon to do so.
The American College of Surgeons has introduced a free online course called STOP THE BLEED® to educate people on how to effectively control bleeding during an emergency. This course covers basic measures like:
how to recognize life-threatening bleeding
how to pack a wound with gauze
how to apply compression to a bleeding wound
how to correctly apply a tourniquet
